Get ready to witness transcenDANCE's annual CREATE production "Harvesting Hope" on July 24 - 25, 2026. How is hope a tool for resilience, transformation, and collective care? How do small ideas and persistent action lead to positive change in our communities? What does it look like to cultivate hope in our own lives? Our 2026 CREATE production asks these questions through original contemporary and hip-hop dance pieces, interwoven with performance poetry and visual art. When transcenDANCE students spoke with local San Diego changemakers early this year, they learned about creative resistance, the many ways they as individuals can engage in changemaking, and what it takes to start and sustain change. Through Harvesting Hope, they share their inspiration, creativity, and ideas for collective action. This exhibit features award-winning, innovative works from the biennial competition of the Japanese Handicraft Instructor’s Association (JHIA). Quilt Nihon is the largest international quilt contest in Japan, and one of the most prestigious in the world. For 50 years now, JHIA has promoted handcrafted arts in Japan by educating and training instructors in eight specialties: quilting, knitting, embroidery, lace making, painting, weaving, leatherwork, and flower art. The JHIA boasts 7,000 certified quilt instructors among its 12,000 members. Its biennial Quilt Nihon exhibition is a unique opportunity to appreciate the creativity and complexity of these works of art. This year’s exhibition features award-winning and notable works in its selection.
