McDonald's of Southern California is teaming up with barbers and hairstylists from Country Club Barber Shop to offer free haircuts to Escondido students as they prepare for the 2026-27 school year. The event will take place on Aug. 17 at McDonald's, 1146 E. Valley Pkwy. Walk-ins are welcome from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with giveaways and fun activities for kids. Children can also enjoy free chocolate chip cookies and apple slices, while supplies last. Limited appointments available, and the event will be held on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thursdays, August 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2026 The Athenaeum's outdoor movie series, Flicks on the Bricks, invites you to enjoy classic movies on our patio during beautiful summer nights. In August, KPBS film critic, arts reporter, and Cinema Junkie podcast host Beth Accomando returns to host the 20th annual Flicks on the Bricks series. Frank Capra was born in Italy and raised in Los Angeles. As an immigrant, he pursued the American Dream. He would go on to win Oscars for directing "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (1936) and other film comedies that championed the common man at the expense of the powers that be. Capra’s films reflect an immigrant's vision of what America and the American Dream were and how inspiring this country at its best could be. But he was never blind to its dark side, to corruption or to evil. His films are fueled by idealism and hope. So, as we celebrate America at 250, let's remember what immigrants like Capra contributed and bask in his vision of what we and America can be at our best. Popcorn is included with your ticket. This concert celebrates American music in honor of the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. For generations, the United States has inspired composers from both within and beyond its borders, shaping works that reflect America’s landscapes, cultures, and evolving identity. This program highlights that influence, beginning with Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World,” a work shaped by his impressions of America’s musical traditions. We continue with Edward MacDowell’s Suite No. 2, “Indian Suite,” one of the earliest major orchestral works by an American composer. The evening concludes with a world premiere of an original piece written by MiraCosta College Symphony Orchestra’s composer‑in‑residence, Christoph Rayburn—to commemorate this historic anniversary. “Ramona Edition” scheduled for Aug 28 at St. Mary’s in the Valley As Songwriter Sanctuary’s flagship venue partner Normal Heights United gives their staff a well-deserved summer programming break, the show must go on! The monthly music series, which features premiere local songwriters in a listening room setting, will take place on August 28 at St. Mary’s in the Valley in Ramona, CA. Hosted by Ramona resident and local artist Cathryn Beeks in collaboration with her music and event production company Listen Local Radio, this month’s showcase will feature original music “in-the-round” from Haywire, Nate Donnis, and Chloe Lou. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with featured music at 7 p.m. Season passes will be honored at this event. ASL will be provided for the featured concert thanks to our sponsors, including a generous contribution from Ability Central. Prior to the show: Beeks, accompanied by Laura Burdette, will also be sharing original music as part of Songwriter Sanctuary’s “Pre-Show Pantry Jam.” This acoustic busking session will take place near the welcome and concession area from 6-6:30 p.m. (just before doors to the main event). Guests are invited to enjoy music upon arrival and encouraged to contribute unopened/unexpired shelf-stable food or gently used clothing to a community pantry for under-resourced Ramona neighbors. About the Featured Artists Chloe Lou: Chloe Lou is a multi-genre songwriter and vocalist with a pension for always trying something new. She has been working with her original band, Chloe Lou & The Liddells, to create unique music reminiscent of 1960’s soul and rock n’roll since 2018 and their debut EP "Storybook" won a San Diego Music Award for Best Pop Album in 2020! She currently performs regularly with The Liddells, as well as The Sidelong Glances (country), The Spreckels Organ Pavilion Rock Band, Good Mojo (top 40’s all genres), as well as many tribute bands and duos around San Diego County. She recently toured in France with the traditional English/Irish folk band, Kick Up the Dust. Nate Donnis: Nate Donnis has been a staple in the San Diego songwriter scene for many years, garnering millions of streams on Pandora and Spotify with The Donnis Trio.
