July 10 – 14 from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. This week of Summer Camp is all about Wood & Clay! We’ll mix up clay and woodworking in Craft Camp this week. Fun projects will result! Campers will learn several techniques in woodworking, clay and glazing. Students learn about the firing process and about the chemistry involved in clay, glazes, and firing. We’ll keep things fun and engaging by incorporating clay and wood into projects… we’ll also work with found objects, and objects from nature. Campers will hone the very tactile skills and dexterity that it takes to work with clay and wood. Sensory exploration, craftsmanship, creativity, and patience (sigh!) all come into play when working in these mediums. Students make projects to take home. This camp is recommended for school-age children 6yrs and up. What to bring: A sun hat or sunscreen if your child is sensitive to sun. It’s best to dress in layers. We will be outdoors. Children need closed-toe shoes and long hair tied back. Bring a refillable water bottle and a snack. If there is a camp ending as ours begins and you need your child transferred, let us know! If you’d like your camper to stay during the lunch hour, there’s a $20 fee for the week to cover the lunchtime gap. "Holiday Glow" will be featuring the California Note Catchers, a women's a cappella chorus. The chorus will be singing a variety of classic, traditional and international holiday music on Sunday, December 10. The event will be held at Paradise Village Liberty Theater, 2700 E. 4th St., National City. This performance is free and any donations will be accepted at the door.

Eclectic, immersive, and mesmerizing; internationally acclaimed guitarist and songwriter Hiroya Tsukamoto takes us on an innovative, impressionistic journey filled with earthy, organic soundscapes that impart a mood of peace and tranquility. Hiroya is a one-of-a-kind guitarist and composer. Born and raised in Kyoto, Japan, he received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in 2000. Since then, he has been performing internationally including the United Nations, Blue Note in New York, and Japanese National Television. This class is taught by women to empower women & non-gender conforming individuals in the woodshop. We cover the properties of wood, machine safety, and techniques on the chop saw, including miters, angled cuts, and how to properly cut joinery for them. Other machines will be introduced as well such as the router, biscuit jointer, and drill press. We’ll show you how to properly sand, and finish your piece with an easy, non-toxic, traditional finish. Celebrate Chanukkah at Yiddishland with Yale Strom and his book reading of “Shoyml Boyml and his Lucky Dreidl.” Yale will talk about his career as a researcher, movie maker, and an author. He will be reading excerpts of the book in English and a bisele af Yiddish, and playing some Chanukkah music. We will have festive nosh and mashke. Speaker: Yale Strom is one of the world’s leading ethnographer-artists of klezmer and Roma music and history. He has conducted extensive ethnographic research throughout Eastern Europe since 1981, made nine documentary films, written twelve books, and has had numerous photo exhibitions throughout the world. He has also composed for theatre, film, radio, television and symphony orchestras. His band, Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi, has made fifteen recordings ranging from traditional klezmer to “new” Jewish jazz. He is currently artist-in-residence/professor in the Jewish Studies Program at San Diego State University.
