Students of the Waldorf School of San Diego High School will mark Cesar Chavez Day with the inaugural “Head, Hands, Heart & Land” limited-run art show. The show, running March 31 – April 7, features jury-selected original works by Waldorf students and will celebrate and open on Cesar Chavez Day at the Logan Heights gallery, CM Curatorial, located adjacent to San Diego’s Cesar Chavez Park. Opening night will be March 31 at 6 p.m. The Waldorf School of San Diego, a K-12 independent school with two campuses located in the City Heights, ranks as one of the best high schools for the arts in California. “Student works are inspired by activism, and ideas such as caring for the land and waterways, standing up for rights and freedoms and being good stewards of social change,” says Rachel Davis, Waldorf School Administrator. “It is a moving display of how the next generation explores themes around social justice, food justice, climate change and conservation.” The Waldorf School of San Diego on Facebook / Instagram

Día de Muertos is a celebration grounded in healing and a way for communities to continue to honor and preserve their sacred cultural ceremony and knowledge. Within each family are the stories, successes, and hardships of the women who created and cared for them. What are the objects that tell those stories? Now is your chance to be the curator of your family’s past and present. In our first “Be Your Own Archivist” class the Women’s Museum of California invites you to learn how to care for textiles in your own home. Do you have beloved family textiles like quilts, garments, tablecloths or rugs that you want to preserve for future generations? Annabelle Camp from Balboa Art Conservation Center will demonstrate proper techniques to preserve beloved textiles. She will demonstrate the best practice for storing textiles, focusing on low cost, archival methods for hanging and folded storage and provide tips on proper climate and pest prevention. Sample materials will be provided for participants to touch and practice best methods of care.

On Sunday afternoon, May 21, PHES Gallery will open its newest exhibition, “Story Quilts” in Carlsbad, CA. "Story Quilts" features the work of eleven local textile and fiber artists; Sandra Lauterbach, Nancy Lemke, Viviana Lombrozo, Nelda McComb, Dan Olfe, Marty Ornish, Karen Rips, Tara Ritacco, Dinah Sargeant, Deborah Weir, and Susan Willen. Calling all Poets! A poetry writing competition will be held at PHES Gallery in conjunction with “Story Quilts.” Please join us for a creative dive into ekphrastic poetry - poetry written in response to art. The public will have the opportunity to write a poem (or poems) in response to the show at the Gallery. Submissions will be accepted through June 11. Each entry must include the quilt number, your name, and the title of your poem. Poems will be performed in the Gallery courtyard on June 25 at 5 p.m., followed by a poet's reception. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 poems.
