Join Oceanside Public Library and Glassless Minds for a free live poetry contest on Saturday, July 15 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Library Courtyard at 330 N. Coast Highway. The Find Your Voice Poetry Contest is a one round, one poem poetry contest for adults that will offer 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash prizes. Sign up starts at 4:30 p.m. and there are 17 spots. The poem does not need to be memorized and should be 5 minutes or less. The event will feature a short set by Rudy K. Francisco, who will also serve as a judge along with San Diego Poet Laureate Jason Magabo Perez and Dr. Angélica M. Yañez. Glassless Minds is a local non-profit that has facilitated and fostered constructive emotional outlets and personal expression in an accepting and safe space for teenagers and young adults through a variety of mediums: spoken word poetry, creative writing, poetry, music and visual art for the last ten years. Support for this program is provided by The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library. The Oceanside Public Library aims to empower the community by promoting literacy, information access, civic engagement, cultural inclusiveness and openness to new ideas. Thursdays from 4 – 5:30 p.m. Ages 6-8 welcome! This month-long class is perfect for kids who love to make things! Using STEAM, children get acquainted with various woodworking tools, techniques, and devices and learn about wood as a material. Students will be guided through a series of exercises that teach skills such as hand-eye coordination, problem solving, craftsmanship, and the mechanics of woodworking hand tools. Students will learn about wood as a material, proper, safe use of hand tools, and will make projects to take home. This class uses mostly hand tools. We teach safe methods for sawing, drilling, and clamping wood in this class. All materials included. Who says people with different abilities and ages can't dance? Since 2008, Wheelchair Dancers Organization(WDO) has offered free dance classes to disabled and non-disabled people of all ages in the San Diego area. After last year's successful showcase, we are back again this year to bring you an afternoon of dance performances unlike any other, featuring our students and professional instructors performing as duets, trios, and a large group number. We'll be treating our audience to hip-hop, Bollywood, Swing, Chacha, and more. Wrap up the afternoon with a dance fitness pop-up with Michele Jones. Anyone of any age or ability can join in. As with all our events, this showcase is suitable for all ages.
