The Showstopper: Created for the social butterfly of the family, this residence boasts spaces for entertaining and stealing away. An entire level of the home is dedicated to having a good time, complete with flamingo pink bar and tropical décor that blends into the exquisitely decked out pool, patio, and deck space that evokes Miami Beach. Alternatively, the home also features a fully sound-proofed music room and a private sauna and spa retreats for when the owners are ready to relax and unwind. The house is L-shaped, just under 3000 square feet with 3 bedrooms, an office, and a loft overlooking the great room. Technically, it is a "1-story house" even though it spans 3 levels. The garage is considered the basement, not a "story". The main living space, consisting of 2600 sq. ft, is the 1-story, and the 350 sq. ft loft is considered a mezzanine, not a second story. The Barona Band of Mission Indians proudly invites the San Diego community to celebrate Native American heritage at the 51st Annual Barona Powwow over Labor Day Weekend. The three-day cultural celebration starts on Friday, September 1 with gourd dancing at 6 p.m. and a dramatic grand entry of dancers in colorful regalia at 8 p.m. The Barona Powwow will continue Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission and parking are free. Hundreds of Native American participants of all ages and from across the country will showcase their dancing skills as they compete in a variety of categories, such as the Fancy Shawl Dance and Grass Dance, for more than $75,000 in prize money. In addition to beautiful regalia and dancing, spectators will be able to enjoy Hand Drum contests, singing and music, popular Native American food including delicious Indian fry bread tacos, arts and crafts, and handcrafted jewelry. The Barona Powwow will be held at the Barona Sports Complex located on the Barona Indian Reservation just one mile north of the Barona Resort & Casino on Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside. Titled “Sining SAMAHAN – The Art of Coming Together”, the concert showcases the Filipinos’ cultural music and dances from various villages and regions in the Philippines. The two-hour program features a rich repertoire of traditional dances and live music performed by SAMAHAN’s talented performers in vibrant traditional Filipino attire. Showcased in the first half of the concert, are the indigenous cultural dances and rituals of the Kalinga tribe of the Cordilleras in Northern Luzon, the Maranao in Mindanao, the Sama and Tausug of the Sulu Archipelago. Their dances and rituals are traditionally performed with the beats of flat and bossed gongs called Gangsa and Kulintang and bamboo or “gabang”. The Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble of SAMAHAN, foremost Kulintang ensemble in Southern CA, provides the Gangsa, Kulintang and bamboo percussion music. The Maranao repertoire features the cultural dances and rituals taught by master artists and cultural bearers to SAMAHAN’s creative committee members during their field research in Mindanao in 2019. The Sama and Tausug indigenous dances were learned by SAMAHAN artists who conducted research in Tawi-Tawi, Philippines and Eastern Sabah, Malaysia. SAMAHAN’s field research was sponsored by the Dr. Lolita Diñoso Carter Endowment through The San Diego Foundation. Featured in the second half of the concert are the European or Western influenced dances, such as the Maria Clara dances, and the rural dances of the folks in the country side in central regions of the Philippines. These dances are performed with live music accompaniment by the SAMAHAN Rondalla String Ensemble. The exhilarating dances and lively music of the SAMAHAN Rondalla and Pakaraguian Kulintang Music Ensembles promise an enjoyable evening! Through the Concert of Philippine Dances and Music, SAMAHAN shares with the audience the exquisiteness of Filipino folk dances and music. The Filipinos’ dances and music performed in rituals, courtship, and festivals, depict the people’s rich culture, customs and traditions. The diversity of their dances and music reflects the interconnectedness with Asian and Western traditions throughout the history of the Filipinos, from the Indian, Chinese, Indochinese, Indonesian, Malay, Spanish, to the Americans. The Concert is made possible in part by the California Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, the Dr. Lolita Diñoso Carter Endowment through the San Diego Foundation and the contributions of individual donors. Join instructor Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. An Additional Supply Fee of $10 (cash only) is due to instructor at the workshop. It includes pre-fused adornments plus jewelry findings for up to 3 items (excluding leather for bracelets/belts). Additional findings, chains, cording, and leather for bracelets and belts will also be available for cash purchase. This workshop is recommended for all skill levels – ages 13 and up. Beginners welcome!
