Brilliant, bold, and not to be missed—Pointeworks returns to The Conrad this summer with "Nocturnes: Five Ballets," an evening of extraordinary dance and live music. Curated by Artistic Director Sophie Williams, Season Three brings together world-class artists from across the country in a dynamic program choreographed entirely by women. The performance features two world premieres: Jacquelyn Long’s new ballet, "Moving Forces," with an original score by award-winning composer Katie Jenkins, performed live by virtuosic pianist Joshua Mhoon and violinist Julia Choi, and a new creation by acclaimed choreographer Keerati Jinakunwiphat, a 2023 Princess Grace Award winner and the first Asian American woman commissioned to create for New York City Ballet. The heart of "Nocturnes" lies in three ballets that illuminate love in its many forms. Audiences will experience the Northern Hemisphere premiere of Andrea Schermoly’s Romeo and Juliet, a poetic reimagining of Shakespeare’s timeless romance; Dani Rowe’s Unsaid, staged by the legendary Sofiane Sylve and hailed by the San Francisco Chronicle as “another dark heartbreaker” that earned a standing ovation; and the return of Reka Gyulai’s Transcendence, which enthralled audiences last season with its sweeping imagery and powerful exploration of love’s endurance. Gershwin in Vienna Concert-Lecture presented by Levi Hammer, piano Tuesday, May 26, 2026 Levi Hammer’s solo piano album "Gershwin in Vienna" brings together his American roots and his current life in Europe, where he has lived for the last decade. The historical and musical connections between Gershwin, Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern are fascinating but rarely explored beyond a tantalizing footnote. At the Athenaeum, Hammer will play much of the album and speak about the musical parallels between Gershwin and the Viennese modernist masters. Paintings by Gershwin and Schoenberg—both accomplished painters!—will accompany Hammer’s performance of their music. In addition, the composers’ Californian connection will be highlighted in a short film shot on Gershwin’s own tennis court in Los Angeles in the 1930s—right where their legendary tennis matches took place. This program is also an artistic and personal self-portrait of Hammer himself as he describes growing from a child of the Great American Songbook to a conductor and pianist wrestling with the rigorous beauties of the Second Viennese School. He has conducted orchestras across the United States and Europe, and his repertoire encompasses more than 70 operas. Additionally, he has prepared acclaimed operatic productions for major conductors, including Lorin Maazel, Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, and Gustavo Dudamel. Besides the standard repertoire, Hammer is an accomplished performer of both Baroque and contemporary music. Relive the hair-raising mission of the USS Midway, which rescued some 3000 desperate “at risk “refugees from Saigon, Vietnam on the last two days of April 1975. Midway was the “tactical evacuation commander “ for Task Force 76 (TF-76) airlift operations, and participated in the largest humanitarian rescue mission in US Navy history. Midway Museum docent Andy Hill will describe the hair raising operation that was the USS Midway’s final deployment to Vietnam, not to wage war, but to rescue refugees in South Vietnam‘s final hours. Hill will share the story of this mission that broke rules and set precedence as a Navy crew conducted the ship’s flight deck operations with embarked refugees. We will use watercolor and acrylic paints, origami and decorative papers, tissue paper, crayons, markers, and pencils. June Rubin has been teaching art for over 30 years.
