Pumpkin Plunge - Kids with pumpkins! Bring a swimsuit and join the Halloween fun at Alga Norte Aquatic Center that transforms into spooky fun with pool activities and games with prizes, and floating obstacles. The Splash Pad will also be open for the little ones. Dry activities include a bounce house, lawn games and the Floating Pumpkin Patch where every child will get to lasso and keep a pumpkin. Tickets are $15 per person. Kids ages 3 and under are free but still need to be registered. Pick up your wristbands in advance at Alga Norte Aquatic Center during the week before the event, to avoid lines. Food will be available for purchase. For safety reasons, only pool noodles and US Coastguard approved floatation devices are allowed in the pool. Food and beverages are available for purchase at the event. Online presale ends at 5 p.m. on the Friday before the event. You will be able to purchase wristbands at the event, if the event is not sold out. Save time and avoid lines by picking up event wristbands in advance. Wristbands will be available for pick up starting the week before the event and are only available at Alga Norte Aquatics Center during regular business hours. All sales are final; no refunds. Calling all superheroes to take on the challenge of the City of Carlsbad’s Super Hero Obstacle Race. Dress up like your favorite super hero at Carlsbad's Super Hero Obstacle Race at Alga Norte Community Park. Parents and children run together through a super hero themed 2K obstacle course. Defeat villains while leaping over tall buildings, crawl through toxic tunnels and navigate 20 obstacles throughout the park. Conquer inflatable mazes and slides, wrecking balls, tights ropes, web crawlers and other obstacles along the way. Registration is $33 per person. Participants must be 4 years and older. Groups will be launched every 10 minutes. The race will take approximately one hour to complete. You can pick a start time that works for you. Registration is open until 5 p.m. the Friday before the event or at the event until 9:30 a.m., if it is not sold out. Participants will receive the following: race logo'd super hero cape, bib number, finishing medal.

Daniel Ho has spent a lifetime widening the circle around a single instrument. He began with the ʻukulele in Honolulu, moved through classical guitar and piano, and built a contemporary jazz career with the band Kilauea. He then expanded into slack key guitar, world music, recording, mastering, instrument design, and video production. By the time he reaches SFJAZZ’s Joe Henderson Lab on May 2, he brings more than a set list. He brings a way of hearing that treats music as craft, curiosity, and daily practice. Ho traces the start of it all to second grade in Kaimukī, when he played the “Star-Spangled Banner” and the Hawaii Five-0 theme at a school assembly with a friend. In Hawaii, he said, kids carried their ʻukuleles to school and played together because the instrument was always close at hand. One recording in particular pulled him deeper: Ohta-San’s “Song for Anna.” “ It got me hooked,” Ho said. “I learned the first eight bars over and over when I was a kid, walked around the house playing the ukulele, and fell in love with it.” That memory still matters because it points to the thread running through his work now: melody and feeling first, then the patient building out of everything around it.
