Oolong Gallery is happy to invite you to the upcoming show Chiffonnier / Ragpicker — an exhibition in dialogue between two Dutch artists: Bert Frings (Rotterdam, NL) and Bas Louter (Los Angeles, CA). The title cites French artist Edouard Manet’s painting The Ragpicker (1865-1870). The traditional chiffonnier makes a living by picking up and selling rags and junk. Bert and Bas produce art by reusing objects and images for practical or aesthetic purposes and so prolonging their usefulness. Bas Louter and Bert Frings met in Utrecht, Netherlands in 1997, and their ongoing dialogue now continues on view at Oolong Gallery. The exhibition will be about their favorite Dutch artist René Daniëls, the influence of moving to the colossal hybrid city LA and of classical vanitas — still life paintings of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Sunday, May 7 from 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. In this workshop, students will learn about the origins of Kintsugi, the Japanese ‘art of golden repair,’ and its meaning as it relates to one’s own life. Instructor Luis Santiago explains, “In these uncertain and crazy times, I believe people can find some solace and comfort in realizing that their so called “scars” and imperfections are things that do not need to be hidden or ashamed of.” While the traditional craft of Kintsugi can take multiple months to complete, mastery in application, and involves toxic lacquer, the techniques used in this workshop to repair two ceramic pieces and embellish these pieces in two distinct Kintsugi-inspired ways brings it to a much wider audience and allows for completion in one workshop. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece. Ages 17+ are welcome. The Martin Luther King Junior Choir San Diego, also known as the MLK Choir, will depart from their usual repertoire of Negro Spirituals and gospel music to present “All ‘Bout the Blues,” an annual music revue that celebrates the many genres of American music derived from the Negro Spiritual. In its 14th annual fundraising event, MLK Choir members will perform popular music from yesterday and today, in keeping with this year's theme, “Back and Forth Through Time.” Audience members can expect dancing, comedy, and, of course, the powerful vocals typical of this local community choir in a show conceived of, directed, and produced by local artist Arnessa Jones. The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir San Diego (MLKCCSD) is a nonprofit charitable organization. The Choir's purpose is to raise funds through a series of concerts to fund educational grants awarded to aspiring San Diego County college-bound high school graduates going on to major in Visual and Performing Arts.
