Anthropogeny, the study of human origins, is an extremely dynamic research field. The last decade has provided many new discoveries, ranging from new fossil finds, ancient DNA data, including from extinct hominins, comparative psychology in captivity and in the wild, molecular and cell biology, neuroscience, and linguistics. New methods in most of these fields and multi-disciplinary collaborations between them are providing exciting new insights into the complicated evolutionary journey that gave rise to our species. Despite this, we remain far from understanding some of the most striking human-specific characteristics: the reasons for our bipedality, the factors selecting for our dexterity at creating and using tools, the true age of fire use in our distant ancestors, the mechanisms, both social and biological, leading to our symbolic capacities, personal names, language, and shared imaginations. This symposium will feature CARTA advisory committee members and provide them the opportunity to share their visions for the future of anthropogeny. They will each highlight where they hope future efforts should be focused and what type of novel collaborations are most promising for improving our understanding of the human phenomenon. This FREE, public symposium will be live streaming and includes a LIVE Discussion and Q&A commencing ~ 3:30 p.m. (Pacific). This is an online-only event. From the KPBS weekend arts preview: An all-ages music festival at the library — sounds super wholesome, right? Stay Strange is an experimental noise art and music collective, and if your idea of "wholesome" is dark and very loud, this is the show for you. Noise art takes some getting used to, but there's a joy to be found in pushing boundaries, whether from experimenting with electronics, sound and gear or just plain old, ear-busting screaming. Artists like Quadra, Dark Friends, Christian Hell, Kole Galbraith and more will perform, and in the courtyard, there'll be art and zines from a bunch of vendors, including San Diego Zine Fest. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: Stay Strange, San Diego’s exclusive noise-music collective, will once again curate Checked Out: An Experimental Music and Art Festival at the downtown Central Library on Saturday, October 15. We’ve gathered an incredible roster of musicians that push the boundaries of mainstream music, creating a new style of sound that is innovative, progressive, and daring. We will commence the music program of Checked Out: An Experimental Music and Art Festival in the Neil Morgan Auditorium at 12:30PM. This program will run until 5:00PM. Thanks to the library, Checked Out: An Experimental Music and Art Festival is free. This is also an all-ages event. First two hours of parking are free with validation. In addition to the adventurous music program in the auditorium we will have an equally exciting array of artists set up in the library courtyard. There you will find artists of all classifications vending art prints, homemade t-shirts, painting, fanzines, toys and more. There will be something for everyone.
