From the mountains to the ocean, the San Diego River Park Foundation is ramping up for its annual celebration of the San Diego River. San Diego River Days kicks off May 13th and runs nine days, through May 21st, bringing together many partner organizations to celebrate the San Diego River as a cultural, ecological, and recreational treasure. Learn classic nuristani chip carving, a 5,000 year old technique from Afghanistan. Students will carve beginner designs on a soft wood board during this class. Each person will take home their carving designs and the knowledge to practice this new craft on their own. This class builds upon itself and renews every 3 weeks. Returning students move on to more complicated designs, and beginning students start with the foundation design and learn to hone beginner skills. Nuristan woodcarving originates from the Nuristan province in Afghanistan. For many years, both men and women have been doing this woodcarving. Nuristani inlay designs each have their own meanings that we’ll learn more about in the class. Nuristani inlay is usually made using soft wood. We’ll provide the supplies for each student. All levels are welcome. Recommended for ages 16 and up. We will supply materials and carving tools, but if you have your own, please let us know. From the Hausmann Quartet: May’s Haydn Voyages program journeys through places and times far and wide, from Haydn’s Vienna and London to Milhaud’s Europe, Caroline Shaw’s musical depiction of the grounds of Washington DC’s Dumbarton Oaks and Max Vinetz’s work inspired by a cross-country journey. Join 17 IF/THEN® Ambassadors, women leaders in science, math, engineering, and technology, for the second IF/THEN® STEAM Fair at the Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park Friday, July 21 through Sunday, July 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 17 STEAM superheroes with careers including conservation biology, cosmetic chemistry, forest ecology, aerospace engineering, archaeology, computer science and robot development for three days of free STEAM fun at the Comic-Con Museum. This event is free to the public and does not require Comic-Con Convention badges. Families, teens, and kids of all ages are welcome: Participate in experiments and demonstrations like powering technology with fruit, mini-excavations, searching for wildlife with radio signals, coding robots, learning about earthquake magnitude using spaghetti and more. Watch each Ambassador give a 15 minute splash talk about their unique career pathways, days in the life with amazing STEAM jobs, anecdotes from the field, and more. Every last Saturday of the month, we are joining the food distribution effort led by local organization La Chula Crew. We will be providing COVID-19, MPOX and other services such as Covered CA assistance. We will be set up behind the National City Public Library by the playground.

In this series of six free-standing workshops, we’ll look at writing the memoir from six different perspectives. Our inquiries will explore uncovering theme and sculpting a structure; we’ll look at different techniques access and write memories, teasing out why they are important and which matter to your story. In another session we’ll practice capturing and expanding small moments that carry deep meaning; and in another, delve into how to transit time through flashback, memory, and scene. Our explorations will review the effective use of voice moving from then to now and back again, and finally, we’ll consider various techniques of fiction writing that can bring our story alive. Participants can sign up for the entire series, select several workshops, or take any single course. The series of lectures will take place online via Zoom on Mondays from May 2 through June 20. Lakehouse Resort, located on the 80 acres recreational Lake San Marcos, is bringing back a summer of unforgettable music with its Summer Concert Series on the lakeside stage. To close out the summer, Young Guns (Superstars of County) will tear up the lakeside stage with songs from iconic country artists old and new on Saturday, August 12. Each concert is performed on the Lakeside Lawn with all lawn seating, so guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or low-back chair. Tickets are $45.
