From the museum: A new public outdoor installation, "Los Trompos," is opening in the park across from The New Children’s Museum on October 8. To kick off the opening day celebrations, there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. followed by a free all-day community celebration in the Museum Park with related art-making activities and food trucks for families to enjoy. Admission is required to experience installations inside the Museum. About "Los Trompos" Inspired by the popular children’s toy, "Los Trompos" consists of six colorfully woven, life-size spinning tops. Children are invited to team up to rotate the tops and climb inside for a spin, encouraging joyful play and collaboration with others. In Spanish, "Los Trompos" translates to “The Spinning Tops,” and the colorful surfaces of each top are woven in the traditional style of Mexican artisans. “The concept behind 'Los Trompos' is based on an approach of traditional toys, their colorful expression and the way they are constructed,” explained Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena, two of Mexico’s leading designers and creators of "Los Trompos," which was originally exhibited at the Museum of High Art in Atlanta. “We wanted to talk about the traditions and skills of the craftsmen in Mexico, and an inheritance of our culture. We like the idea of translating these techniques into new symbols.” "Los Trompos" is a traveling installation jointly commissioned with the Bay Area Discovery Museum, where these lively, eye-catching and larger-than-life tops. All six spinning tops will be on display at The New Children’s Museum until January 2023, after which three of the tops will return to the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Despite their ubiquity and our love of them, confusion abounds about how to choose and cook leafy greens. This Small Group Workshop will help clear the fog. Rosie Gill and April Dodd, Milk Street’s director and assistant director of education, will be your guides as you learn which greens are bitter, peppery or sweet, why some need a long braise to shine while others want just the kiss of hot steam, and how to use herbs as more than garnish. We’ll talk about how to prep the different greens for easy cooking, which stems have great flavor and texture, and when to choose frozen greens for better and faster cooking. To drive home all these lessons and more, we’ll make four recipes, each featuring a different technique and leafy green: East-African Braised Collards with Tomatoes, North Indian Saag, Kale Salad with Dates, Pistachios and Green Tahini, and Hot Oil-Flashed Chard with Ginger, Scallions and Chili. The two-act play, written by Synthia L. Hardy and directed by Bryan Rasmussen combines storytelling and song to capture the essence of Billie Holiday’s music and life. In the first act, Holiday prepares for her show while answering the questions of two unseen reporters. In the second act, Hardy embodies Lady Day, (a nickname given to Holiday by musician Lester Young), in a concert of her hits that includes “’Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do” and “Willow, Weep for Me.” Through a voice reminiscent of Holiday’s with its raspy edge and incorporation of crying and wailing, Hardy portrays the iconic artist as simultaneously classy and tough, vulnerable and versatile, hopeful at times and hopeless at others, but most of all, full of heart and sympathy.
