  • After touring "Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest" across the country for five years in over 40 live engagements, Kristina Wong’s critically acclaimed one woman show is finally captured in her first ever concert film through the dynamic direction of Michael Closson. An unforgettable tour de force performance. Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is Kristina Wong’s raucous and whip-smart take on the high rates of depression and suicide among Asian American women. She sets out to single-handedly save them all by the end of her 80-minute film! She fails fantastically, creating hysterical laughter and a sobering coda. It’s one hell of a roller coaster ride! But don’t worry… it’s all fiction. • Emma Willmann headlines Laugh Factory San Diego! About this event ADHD, DYSLEXIC, GENDER WIGGLY, STEP GETTER Emma Willmann is one of New York City’s top comedians, and perhaps one of the only dyslexic-gender-wiggly-comics-with-ADHD from Blue Hill, Maine. In third grade, Mrs. Weller would bribe Emma with the chance to tell a story at the end of every class if Emma promised to stop talking to the other classmates. Now, Emma gets to tell stories nightly at The Comedy Cellar, on Netflix’s: The Comedy Line Up, Comedy Central, and is one of the few comics ever to have multiple appearances on The Late Show with Stephan Colbert. All of which has earned Emma a spot on Caroline’s 10 Funniest Comics, Just For Laughs: New Faces, and TimeOut’s 10 Funniest Women in NYC. Emma’s mom is “really proud of all of this but doesn’t like comedy.” Additionally, Emma is an actor and writer best known for playing the role of Beth on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and also featured on Paramount Plus’s The Good Fight, Judd Apatow’s Crashing, MTV, and TruTV. Emma also has a chart-topping podcast, Inside The Closet and is a regular on The Taylor Strecker Show. Emma tells stories everyday on Instagram and TikTok, several of which have gone viral and earned a total of 450,000 followers (although we’re pretty sure Mrs. Weller isn’t one of them). From peanut butter to porn preferences, Emma loves talking about everything and is known for the unique ability to authentically connect with all types of audiences, even the occasional heckler. 18 and over 2 drink minimum All sales final Must follow all county guidelines SOCIALS: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
  • Opening reception: Friday, July 15, 2022 6:30-8:30 p.m. Free. RSVP here. From the gallery: This summer, the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego will host the first NextGen: Graduating Artist Exhibition, which celebrates the San Diego/Tijuana art scene. NextGen is an exhibition that aims to support recently graduated artists while also fostering the local art ecosystem. Applications by graduating artists from interdisciplinary backgrounds were reviewed by a panel of professionals and experts in the art field. This year, the jury was comprised of Los Angeles-based artist Beatriz Cortez; Artistic Director of Bread and Salt in San Diego, Isabel Dutra; and curator at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, María Elena Ortiz. Seven artists were selected based on their artistic skill, conceptual approach, and innovation: María Antonia Eguiarte Souza, Victor Castaneda, beck haberstroh, Isidro Pérez García, Dianne Preciado, Gideon Sawyer, and Matt Williams. By providing space for local artists and encouraging professional development, ICA San Diego fosters inclusive approaches towards building our region as a vibrant destination for contemporary visual arts. We strengthen ties within the local arts community and create a more fertile ground for emerging careers in the arts.
