From the Athenaeum: The 23rd Athenaeum Summer Festival is a series of four of concerts that will feature pianist Gustavo Romero. For 22 years, the Athenaeum has presented unforgettable festivals featuring virtuoso pianist and San Diego native Gustavo Romero performing the complete piano repertoire of a specific composer. Whether you have been with us all 22 years or have yet to experience the wonder of this artist—who plays from memory—you will not want to miss our upcoming 23rd Summer Festival. Romero, a native San Diegan, first performed at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library as a young boy, and it was with him that the Athenaeum planned its first Summer Festival in 1999, the organization's 100th anniversary. Each year, Romero chooses composers to study in depth, sharing the full range of their artistry. Dinners are offered after each concert at the Athenaeum. The dinners, offered immediately following each concert in private homes or at the Athenaeum, are an opportunity for concertgoers to socialize, meet Mr. Romero, and share a delicious meal. All concerts begin at 4 PM at the Athenaeum. Priority seating will be given to Donor level members and above, and to dinner guests. Perspectives Spaces and Campana Studios are pleased to announce the opening of "Femme Vitale," an exhibition including works from Southern California-based artists Ana Andrade, Kirstyn Hom, Dillon Chapman, and Nicole Merton. "Femme Vitale" is also the name of a six-episode short documentary series that will launch Telepathine Studio, a film and video production atelier led by creative director Carolina Montejo. Both the exhibition and the documentary series celebrate women working in art, environmentalism, activism, and music who are shifting the paradigms of identity, gender, and joy in the larger San Diego region. The artist reception will be held on Saturday, June 4 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Perspectives Space, Encinitas. The exhibit will run until Friday, July 8. RSVP for the opening reception here! About the artists: Telepathine Studio is a niche video and filmmaking production company that focuses on social and environmental narratives, arthouse films, documentaries, as well as music and sound-based clips. Telepathine works with a group of creative professionals in cinematography, design, narrative strategy, animation, as well as recording and editing, to make films, videos, and experimental media that have striking presence, coherence, and care. Ana Andrade is a trans-border artist who lives and works between Tijuana and San Diego. Andrade is a multidisciplinary artist who works with video, sound, sculpture, photography, objects, and text. Nicole Merton is a photographer and activist of Mescalero Apache descent living and working in Orange County. Her most recent work “ Here… Our Voices, Our MMIW Movement”, focuses on the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement. Dillon Chapman is a Southern California-based artist, educator, and cultural theorist who investigates notions of self as subject/object. Drawing from personal and cultural archives, her practice contemplates intimacy, desire, and relations of power through writing and image-making. Kirstyn Hom is a California-based artist with a BA in Arts from UC Berkeley and an MFA in Visual Arts from UC San Diego, working with sculpture, installation, and performance to explore the intersection of language and textiles. Comic-Con International and San Diego Public Library have teamed up for the Comic Conference for Educators and Librarians. This FREE five-day conference will take place at the San Diego Central Library during Comic-Con® from July 20-24, and will explore the role comics play in promoting education and literacy for all ages. Those in the library and education fields are invited to learn creative and exciting ways to incorporate comics and other popular arts into their work. Through presentations and panel discussions, the Conference hopes to engage the community and promote comics as a medium for learning. The Conference is free to attend, but space is limited and registration is required for each day.
