  • The Elizabeth Hospice invites individuals interested in helping adults and children facing the challenges associated with a life-limiting illness and those grieving the death of a loved one to a free volunteer orientation session conducted via Zoom video conferencing. Hospice volunteers are an important part of the care team at The Elizabeth Hospice and have an opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life. Attendees will learn about a wide variety of virtual and in-person opportunities throughout San Diego County and Southwest Riverside County, including serving as a patient companion, providing caregiver respite, performing aromatherapy, sewing Cuddle Bears, officiating at veteran pinning ceremonies, and much more. Information will be provided on both the application and training process. An email address and a device with a camera interface are needed to participate in the training session or attendees can join by phone. What are the implications for the next presidential election? Thad Kousser, Professor in the UCSD Political Science Department, will give us his overview of the most important election results. Professor Kousser studies American state and national politics, voting reforms, direct democracy, and how politicians use social media. He joined the department in 2003 and has served as chair 2016-2022. He is a frequent commentator on American politics for venues such as NPR, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times. Anthony Doerr is the author of "All the Light We Cannot See", which was awarded the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and the 2015 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction, and Cloud Cuckoo Land, which was a finalist for the 2021 National Book Award and is currently a finalist for Novel of the Year in the British Book Awards. He has also completed the story collections "The Shell Collector" and "Memory Wall", the memoir "Four Seasons in Rome", and the novel "About Grace". Anthony Doerr has been lauded for his lyricism, his precise attention to the physical world, and his gift for metaphor. The San Francisco Chronicle characterized Doerr’s literary ancestry as a combination of “Henry David Thoreau (for his pantheistic passions) and Gabriel García Márquez (for his crystal-cut prose and dreamy magic realism).” Included in the ticket is live music from Derren Raser to begin at 6:15, when doors open for general admission seating.
