Details are beginning to emerge about the life of Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, the gunman who killed two and injured nine others in the attack at Brown University last week. He is also believed to have killed an MIT professor on Monday, police said.

Oktoberfest in El Cajon Returns September 26–28 & October 3–5, 2025 El Cajon’s beloved Oktoberfest, hosted by the German American Societies of San Diego, is back for two fun-filled weekends: September 26–28 and October 3–5, at 1017 S. Mollison Avenue. Since 1972, this family-friendly festival has celebrated German culture with live music feature our friends from Germany, the Guggenbach-Buam! We‘ll have folk dancing, contests, kids’ activities, and authentic German food and beer. Highlights include the opening parade and ceremonial keg tapping on Friday, Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m., plus the grand raffle drawing on Sunday, Oct. 5, where one lucky winner will receive a round-trip flight for two to Germany. The Coronado Historical Association is delighted to host noted historian, author, and SDSU lecturer Richard Carrico for the final installment of the Fall 2025 Wine & Lecture Series. Mr. Carrico will be covering the buried history of San Diego's lost city: El Presidio Real de San Diego. Established in 1769 and abandoned by 1835, El Presidio was the first permanent European settlement on the Pacific coast and was the base for all the Spanish missions that spread throughout California. Come explore the history and hidden remnants of this National Historic Landmark through this fascinating lecture! He is a lecturer in the Department of American Indian Studies at San Diego State University and lives in Warner Springs. He is a well-respected scholar, public speaker, and researcher who has made significant contributions to our understanding of local Native American culture. His primary area of research is the Indian people of southern California and northern Mexico followed closely by the Spanish colonial period in San Diego County. Richard was recently presented with the prestigious Norman Neuerburg Award for Outstanding Contributions Towards the Study and Preservation of California’s Missions, Presidios, and Ranchos. In addition to more than 30 publications in professional journals, Richard is the author of an award-winning true crime book "Monsters on the Loose" (2024), "History of Wines and Wineries of San Diego County" (2016); Ramona and other books including the revised "Strangers in a Stolen Land: The Indians of San Diego County" (2018). Beyond the academic realm Richard has authored historically or archaeologically based articles for the San Diego Union, California Magazine, Ranch and Coast Magazine, San Diego Home & Garden, and other popular magazines. We are part of Eastlake High School’s robotics team, TitanBot 2543. We are a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team, a team run entirely by students, and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN: 45-3973984) located in Chula Vista, CA. As part of our team's community outreach, we organize and host an annual Girls Inspiring Real Leadership In STEAM (G.I.R.L.S.) Conference. We have the opportunity to invite students from 6th-12th grades to listen to selected inspirational speakers from STEAM careers and leadership backgrounds that could form a lasting impact on the young students in our community. Our goal is to inspire and equip students from 6th to 12th grade to become tomorrow's leaders while fostering an interest in STEAM education. It is not limited to girls attending; everyone is welcome to come. Though we are still encouraging girls in STEAM. This year, the theme of our conference is “Taking the Helm”. Our event is divided into two segments. The first segment consists of speaker presentations that each last for about ten minutes. The second segment will be our “Speed Networking” event, where we present students with the opportunity to talk to college students and other professionals in STEAM careers and education. This year, our event will be hosted at Eastlake Middle School and is planned for Saturday, September 20, 2025.
