UPDATE: The New Play Festival has been rescheduled for April 1-3, 2022 New Village Arts, North County's cultural hub, is hosting its annual Final Draft New Play Festival which solicits emerging playwrights to submit a 10-minute, one act full length play that will be performed during the festival in January 2022. Special encouragement is given to underestimated and underrepresented community members in order to represent all artist voices in the community. Performances include 10 never before seen plays written by talented local playwrights, as well as delicious craft beers. If you'd like to partake in the storytelling, grab a pint and join the artists panel where community artists and leaders share what changes they'd like to see in the San Diego art scene, try monologue writing at the playwrighting workshop, or even take to the stage at the kickoff party open mic night. Doug McMinimy converts the dance from a sequence of movements in space and time into a series of still photographs. These dance images have been selected and organized in this gallery as a re-membering of the dance in the form of a photographic art installation. Lost is the dimension and quality of movement. Instead, the fleeting gesture is suspended in time, allowing us the opportunity to contemplate the dancer’s fleeting gesture. A wide-angle lens was primarily used for these images, allowing the photographer to work in close proximity to the dancer and the viewer to become immersed in the experience of dance. About the artist: Douglas McMinimy is a San Diego-based photographer who works exclusively with dancers. He began to dance in his late teens and co-founded modern dance group 456 Speed-Up in 1980. By the 2000s, his connections with dance had waned. He began carrying a camera, photographing the New England flora on daily dog walks on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Photography facilitated his prodigal return to dance in 2017. Having relocated to San Diego with its thriving dance community, he became determined to focus his creative efforts on photographing dance, particularly in a studio setting, which enables a relationship of collaboration between McMinimy and the dancers he photographs. A 59-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson and resisting arrest in connection with a 10-acre vegetation fire near the Buena Vista Lagoon.

Join us in a celebration for a cause, bringing light and resources to suicide awareness and mental health with an interactive music and art experience. This inaugural event is inspired and dedicated to singer/songwriter Kiela Gwin, who died of suicide at the age of 27 in 2019. During this unique and uplifting event, we will come together to hear Kiela's beautiful music, interactively paint a mural that honors all loved ones lost to suicide, and raise money for the incredible work of local nonprofit, Survivors of Suicide Loss (SOSL). There will also be a silent auction, DJ and hors d'oeuvres. All proceeds from this event will go directly to SOSL. In bringing this fundraiser to life, we are hoping to shine a light on the issues surrounding suicide and give people an avenue to come out of the shadows and celebrate the lives of those lost together, making this a topic of discussion for everyone to have –not just those directly affected.
