  • The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library welcomes Anne Labovitz for a special presentation of her career, process, recent projects, and exhibition "The Blue Hour." The reception begins at 6 p.m. and is followed by a 6:30 p.m. lecture. Inspired by the blue cast of twilight, Anne Labovitz uses light and its profound meanings in various contexts as the central construct of "The Blue Hour." She aims to respond to today’s world by challenging isolation, loneliness, and disconnection through activating color and light in large-scale works. Labovitz has an extensive international exhibition history and has work in many private and public collections, including the Walker Art Center; Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport; Mayo Clinic; Minnesota Marine Art Museum; International Portrait Gallery, Bosnia-Herzegovina; Växjö Konsthall, Sweden; Isumi City Offices, Japan; the University of Raparin, Rania Iraqi Kurdistan; the City of Petrozavodsk, Russia; and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. She is an adjunct professor and mentor in the MFA program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
  • Join Oceanside Public Library and Glassless Minds for a free live poetry contest on Saturday, July 15 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Library Courtyard at 330 N. Coast Highway. The Find Your Voice Poetry Contest is a one round, one poem poetry contest for adults that will offer 1st, 2nd and 3rd place cash prizes. Sign up starts at 4:30 p.m. and there are 17 spots. The poem does not need to be memorized and should be 5 minutes or less. The event will feature a short set by Rudy K. Francisco, who will also serve as a judge along with San Diego Poet Laureate Jason Magabo Perez and Dr. Angélica M. Yañez. Glassless Minds is a local non-profit that has facilitated and fostered constructive emotional outlets and personal expression in an accepting and safe space for teenagers and young adults through a variety of mediums: spoken word poetry, creative writing, poetry, music and visual art for the last ten years. Support for this program is provided by The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library. The Oceanside Public Library aims to empower the community by promoting literacy, information access, civic engagement, cultural inclusiveness and openness to new ideas.   • San Diego County’s largest Thanksgiving day running event is back with fun, fitness and festivities on Nov. 23, 2023. The O’side Turkey Trot attracts visitors from 46 States and 460 cities and benefits the Move Your Feet Before You Eat!® Foundation. Those interested in running, walking or trotting through Oceanside can choose from 5-mile, 5K and kids run courses. Registration is now open for the 18th annual event. Course & Parking Maps The Trot will feature a costume contest, the largest teams competition and local live entertainment on the course. Trotters will receive race swag including finisher medals for all participants, free digital photos and participant shirts sporting brand new artwork that captures the O’side Turkey Trot spirit. At the 2023 O’side Turkey Trot, the race will continue its efforts in giving back to the Oceanside community, as the race itself raises money for the Move Your Feet Before You Eat Foundation, which gives funding to nonprofits that serve O’side residents.   • The Center for Leadership and Entrepreneurial Studies in collaboration with the Lavin Entrepreneurship Center at San Diego State University, The University of California San Diego, SCORE San Diego Chapter, and community partners, will be launching Cohort 3 of the Community Bootcamp for Entrepreneurs, a 6-week training program for entrepreneurs in underserved communities. More than 30 entrepreneurs from some of San Diego’s most underserved communities will participate in this year’s program. Working with instructors from leading colleges and universities, the entrepreneurs will take part in a mentorship program led by business executives from SCORE then paired with student consultants to work on value-add projects that are necessary to move their businesses forward. The bootcamp is held at the Kroc Salvation Army located at 6753 University Ave in San Diego, and offers a strong exposure to key concepts, tools, and approaches to starting and growing a business. It is targeted to people in San Diego County with a dream of a business they want to start, or who have launched an early-stage venture and need some guidance and insights. It also features top faculty from local universities, subject matter experts and successful entrepreneurs over six consecutive Saturday mornings starting on September 9 and ending on October 14. This bootcamp is an initiative under the Urban Poverty and Business Initiative (UPBI), which is a collaboration among over 30 universities and non-profit organizations globally, working together to help individuals in underserved communities start and grow sustainable businesses.
