  • Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: - Carving safety - Honing/sharpening - Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood - Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle - Carving out the handle - Sanding the spoon and handle Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves).   • The Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association’s annual Junior Adaptive Sports Camp is almost here! We are expecting 60 campers between the ages of 4 and 18 with physical challenges, such as spina bifida, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spinal cord injuries. This unique 5-day camp will take place July 24-28, 2023 at Crown Point Park and Miramar College right here in San Diego. At camp, the athletes work with committed volunteers and instructors who share a passion for adaptive sports, while learning the fundamentals of approximately 15 different activities such as wheelchair basketball, tennis, archery, swimming, handcycling, water tubing, rugby, and more. Athletes develop important skills to help them stay active and healthy, gain positive self-esteem, leadership, independence and establish a desire for lifelong activity – because everyone deserves a chance to play! New to this year’s performance will be featured guest vocalist Devin DeSantis. It’s a program full of Christmas classics, sing-alongs, holiday cheer and jolly spirit. The concert will be led once again by the artistic tour-de-force team consisting of celebrated guest conductor Christopher Dragon and Director Jonathan Gilmer, and it features the return of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Master Chorale and the San Diego Children’s Choir.
