Thursdays, August 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2026 The Athenaeum's outdoor movie series, Flicks on the Bricks, invites you to enjoy classic movies on our patio during beautiful summer nights. In August, KPBS film critic, arts reporter, and Cinema Junkie podcast host Beth Accomando returns to host the 20th annual Flicks on the Bricks series. Frank Capra was born in Italy and raised in Los Angeles. As an immigrant, he pursued the American Dream. He would go on to win Oscars for directing "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (1936) and other film comedies that championed the common man at the expense of the powers that be. Capra’s films reflect an immigrant's vision of what America and the American Dream were and how inspiring this country at its best could be. But he was never blind to its dark side, to corruption or to evil. His films are fueled by idealism and hope. So, as we celebrate America at 250, let's remember what immigrants like Capra contributed and bask in his vision of what we and America can be at our best. Popcorn is included with your ticket. Join OMA’s Free First Sundays for Art for All! Each month, OMA welcomes friends and neighbors on Free First Sundays to join in Art for All, our fun hands-on art-making experience led by artists and cultural partners from our community. The Ilan-Lael Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and celebrating the artistic legacy of James Hubbell. Founded in 1982 by James and Anne Hubbell, the Ilan-Lael Foundation’s mission is to inspire creativity, foster a deep connection with nature, and provide a sanctuary where art and nature harmoniously coexist. Join us in partnership with Ilan-Lael Foundation and OMA staff for an air-dry clay moquette-making session where we will focus on the themes and shapes used in Hubbell’s iconic architecture, featured in the Brothers in Arts: James Hubbell and Bert Hubbell exhibition at OMA. Celebrating 25 years as one of Ireland’s leading traditional bands A traditional band with a truly worldwide reach, Téada has appeared as a frequent headliner at major music festivals throughout Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia. Highlights include a 30,000-capacity stadium concert in Brittany, along with performances at Rainforest World Music Festival & Penang World Music Festival in Malaysia, Edmonton Folk Festival in Canada, Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe and World Music Festival Taiwan. In 2014 the band performed to 40,000 people during an extensive 7-week tour of Japan / Taiwan. Joining Téada on stage will be San Diego’s own Rose Academy of Irish Dance, whose champion instructors have been sharing the tradition of Irish dance throughout the region for more than three decades. Experience the excitement of stunning costumes, lightning-fast footwork, and infectious rhythms as these talented dancers bring the spirit of Ireland to life in a vibrant collaboration with one of the world’s premier traditional Irish bands.

The history of illuminated manuscripts is filled with beauty and intrigue. These hand-written books which were prized throughout Europe, had painted embellishments and often utilized precious metals such as gold and silver. The pages of these miniature works of art were made up of animal skins called vellum. Illuminated manuscripts were produced in Europe between 1100-1600, and often originated from monasteries or were commissioned by wealthy individuals who wanted them for their personal libraries. Between the 13th and 15th centuries, upper class patrons supported the creation of private workshops that flourished primarily in French and Italian cities and their surrounding courts such as Bruges. One has only to look at the masterpiece, "Les Tres Riches Heures du Duc De Berry" by the noted Limbourg Brothers, to understand how amazing and prized these handmade books became. By 1440 however, their popularity began to diminish with the ability to mass produce books with the advent of the printing press. In this docent-led virtual talk, important manuscripts will be discussed along with their influence on the art of the late Medieval and early Renaissance. Timken Museum of Art on Facebook / Instagram
