  • Saturday, May 9 marks the 34th anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the nation’s largest one-day food drive. Each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations left by customers at their mailboxes. The food goes directly to the San Diego Food Bank and other local pantries to help families in San Diego County who are facing hunger. Over the past 30 years, the drive has collected more than 1.94 billion pounds of food nationwide. Yet the need remains high—over 47 million Americans, including 13 million children and 7.4 million seniors, experience food insecurity. The drive is especially important in spring, when many food pantries run low on supplies and school meal programs are unavailable to many children. How to help: Place a bag of non-perishable food by your mailbox on Saturday, May 9, 2026, and your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it the San Diego Food Bank and other local food pantries. Together, we can help Stamp Out Hunger® National Association of Letter Carriers’ on Facebook / Instagram
  • Megs and Davey are Vietnam vets who don’t see much of each other anymore, although they live in the same town. But, on opening day of trout season, Megs shows up to take Davey fishing in honor of their pal Bobby, who died alongside them in war, and to get some closure on the tragic experience they shared. Davey lives with his sister Martha, a plain, lonely high school teacher who acts as his caregiver. He masks his pain with alcohol and refuses to talk about his war experiences. The gregarious, charming Megs tries to hide his own explosively angry tendencies and can’t stop talking about Vietnam. Their friendship is tested when a romantic relationship develops between Megs and Martha. All three characters are “wounded warriors,” struggling to get past their pain, loss and guilt and get on with life. This play is recommended for high school age or older. • A special screening of the film that brought reggae music to the world and made the late Jimmy Cliff a global icon. Blessed with one the best soundtracks ever put on film, "The Harder They Come" is a gritty and razor sharp vision of working class life in Jamaica, a ground-breaking film that demonstrated that music and art can change the world. Jimmy Cliff who died in 2025 plays Ivan, a young songwriter who leaves the country for the big city to find his fortune. His dreams of making it in the music business and his battles with crooked promoters, religious conservatives and criminals on both sides of the law make him a folk hero. Shot in 1972 at the dawn of the blaxpoitation era in American movies following the success of Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, Shaft, and Super Fly, this Jamaican film is a significant achievement in the development, in the 1970s, of both an international Black popular culture and worldwide Black independent film movement. Professor Mychal Odom of Mesa College will facilitate a Q&A session after the film Register now
