Join us on Wednesday evenings for a restorative yoga session at the Museum of Us! All are welcome, regardless of physical ability, experience, or age. Classes are held in the Museum rotunda by yoga instructor, Lunita Velásquez. The evening classes promote relaxation and restoration by strengthening the mind-body connection with deep stretching, breathwork, and a welcoming space. All are welcome, regardless of physical ability or yoga experience. People under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring a yoga mat if you have one for your practice. We encourage guests to wear layers and bring blocks, blankets, and/or any additional yoga accessories they would prefer that will support their practice. The Museum will have a limited number of clean blankets, blocks, and mats available to lend out if needed. The class will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. Please plan ample time for parking within Balboa Park. Museum doors will open at 5:15 p.m. for check-in and to set up your mat. To maintain a quiet restorative experience for all, the Museum doors will be closed and locked at 5:40 p.m. Registration is available online and walk-ins are welcome. Partisan polarization poses an ominous and urgent threat to American democracy. How can responsible leaders work together to protect the integrity of elections and restore public confidence in democracy? On December 6, 2023, at 5:30 p.m., we bring together two leading voices on American elections for a candid conversation about how to bring the two political parties together to defend this fundamental pillar of democracy. Speakers Jocelyn Benson: Michigan Secretary of State, and an elected Democrat who has been awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal Stephen Richer: Maricopa County Recorder, and an elected Republican who administers elections in the second-largest voting jurisdiction in the United States. In this talk, Sherman Heights Community Center (SHCC) Executive Director and Community Leader Daniela Kelly will speak about the importance of place and how spaces can bring together the different elements of the self and community. She will speak of her trajectory through the Southwest/U.S.- Mexico Border and its relevance in creating her sense of self and being. Daniela will also share about SHCC's partnership with Mingei and its current Community Spotlight, a Día de los Muertos altar installation that is on view outside of the Museum from October 10 until November 30. About Daniela Kelly Daniela Kelly has over 20 years of work experience in the non-profit sector. A lifelong passion for the arts led Daniela to positions as a Museum Educator at the San Diego Museum of Art and as a Bilingual Director at the Athenaeum Art Center. Daniela currently serves as Executive Director of the Sherman Heights Community Center. At the Community Center, Daniela develops educational opportunities, cultural programming, and strategic partnerships that support the rich cultural traditions of Latino, Chicano, and Mexican-American communities while also enhancing the well-being of the communities served. Daniela earned B.A. degrees in Economic and Spanish Literature from the University of California San Diego. She has an M.A. degree in International Affairs from the School of Global Policy and Strategy, also at UC San Diego. Daniela earned a second M.A. degree from San Diego State University in Art History. In her free time, Daniela enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, seeing art exhibitions, and making chocolate from bean to bar. Gerry’s talk will cover Community Choice Energy from 3 angles, CCE in California, CCE across the US, and new CCE initiatives in Colorado and New Hampshire. There will be time for questions from the audience. Gerry Braun serves as IRESN's Chair. His knowledge of energy markets, electricity systems and clean energy supply technologies is rooted in his work over the years with leading firms and agencies such as Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Bechtel, Southern California Edison Company, BP Solar, Standard Solar, the US Department of Energy and the California Energy Commission. He organized and managed important and continuing US and California energy R&D programs and also held senior executive, marketing and business development roles in global and local solar companies. He is a member and recent chair of the Gas Technology Institute’s Public Interest Advisory Committee. He holds a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan and graduate degrees in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
