About The Zzymzzy Quartet Rhymes with ‘Whimsy’ The guys from the Zzymzzy Quartet have simple ambitions: they just want to play it like it was when it was unamplified, melodic, swinging, dreamy, full of sly surprise. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals Matt Gill - Clarinet Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. Since the Zzymzzy Quartet came together in 2004, they’ve played dances, parties, weddings, festivals, art openings, and events throughout Southern California to unanimous enthusiasm, carving out a name for themselves as a tasty dance band and a classy addition to every wedding. In 2017, ART HURTS Records released their second CD, Petite Fleur which, on top of inspired playing and elegant arrangements, features cameos from a variety of beloved San Diego musicians. The third in a series of exhibitions at Art Produce Gallery in 2026, the exhibition opens with a public reception on April 18 from 4-7 p.m. and will remain on view through May 14. In keeping with Space 4 Art’s mission to promote meaningful dialogue and creative exchange, Moctezuma will lead a Conversation with the Artists on Thursday, May14 from 6-8 p.m. "Instructions for Unrest: Art Against Complacency" brings together artists who view art as a tool to disrupt and to sound an alert. Emerging from a moment of heightened political and social tension, the exhibition reflects on a year marked by widespread protest and renewed public resistance to policies that have caused national and global instability. In the United States and across the world, people have taken to the streets in response to political extremism, social inequity, environmental crisis, and the erosion of civil rights. Artists, too, have responded using their practices to question power, confront injustice, and refuse silence. The exhibition examines the role of art as a catalyst for awareness and action. Through diverse materials and approaches, the featured works expose systems of power, challenge historical amnesia, and confront our impulse to look away. Some artworks mourn loss, others invite participation, and still others demand accountability. Together, they insist that artistic expression can function as a form of civic engagement and resistance. Curator Alessandra Moctezuma frames unrest as a necessary friction that makes change possible. The exhibition invites viewers to look inward, and examine their own position and experiences within the social and political structures the works reveal. Produced by Space 4 Art and presented at Art Produce Gallery, the exhibition is part of ongoing efforts to support artists and activate cultural dialogue across the region through the Prebys Foundation’s Arts Ecosystem Grant. Deadlines for entry are approaching for the 2026 San Diego County Fair’s expansive competitive exhibits program — a beloved tradition that invites community members of all ages to showcase their talent, creativity and craftsmanship. With dozens of opportunities spanning arts, crafts, culinary creations and agricultural achievements, the San Diego County Fair celebrates and rewards the remarkable work being done throughout our region. Competitors have the chance to earn awards, cash prizes and, of course, those iconic blue ribbons. At the heart of the Fair experience, these competitions transform everyday hobbies into extraordinary exhibits. They celebrate the passion and skill found throughout San Diego County — honoring first-time entrants, seasoned competitors, students, professionals and families alike. This year’s theme, “Once Upon a Fair,” celebrates storytelling in all its forms — and every entry tells a story. A quilt stitched over months. A photograph captured in a fleeting moment. A perfectly preserved jar of summer fruit. A student’s first award-winning painting. Each competition entry becomes part of the larger story that unfolds across the Fairgrounds each summer. Participants enjoy more than just the thrill of competition. Karl Zingheim, a lecturer at SDSU and Historian for the USS Midway Museum, will present on the crucial, and often overlooked, history of The San Diego Museum of Art and Balboa Park during World War I and World War II. His talk will detail how Balboa Park and the Museum supported the home front and war effort by serving as military facilities, temporary housing, training grounds, and centers for morale and cultural preservation. Frontwave Credit Union and the Frontwave Foundation will host Pawpalooza, a free community pet adoption festival, on Saturday, April 11, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Frontwave Credit Union, 1278 Rocky Point Drive in Oceanside. The event will bring together local animal rescue organizations, food trucks, vendors, and pet lovers for a lively day focused on helping pets find loving forever homes. Designed as a family-friendly community event, Pawpalooza will feature adoptable dogs, cats, and rabbits, along with giveaways, games, a pet-themed mini market, and appearances by the mascots from the San Diego Sockers and San Diego Clippers. Guests will also be able to enjoy food and drinks from local food trucks throughout the event. To help encourage adoptions, Frontwave Credit Union will contribute $100 toward each adoption fee for families who adopt a pet during the event. “Pawpalooza is a wonderful way to bring the community together around a shared cause while helping deserving animals find safe, loving homes,” said Todd Kern, Chief Experience Officer. “We are proud to support the rescue organizations doing this important work every day and to create an event that is both meaningful and fun for local families.” Participating rescue partners include Labs and More Rescue, Tiny Kitten Coven, Furballs Furever Rescue, Amazing Strays Rescue, San Diego House Rabbit Society, Sunrise Rescue, Passion for Pitties Rescue, Homebound Hounds, and SPOT Saving Pets One at a Time. Pawpalooza also will highlight local businesses and community partners through its Pet Mini Market and vendor area. According to Frontwave Foundation, the event is part of Frontwave’s Give360 initiative, which supports local causes, community connection, and neighborhood impact. The event is free and open to the public, and Frontwave notes that community members do not need to be credit union members to attend.
