  • We’ve all been there; that half-finished draft you keep saying you’ll complete ‘one day.’ Maybe you got stuck with a character or a part of the plot? Maybe life got in the way? Maybe the project simply lost its pizzazz. But either way; you’re stalled. How to Actually Finish Your Book is a practical workshop for writers who want to finish without burning themselves out. In this workshop, we’ll discuss time management strategies, revision ideas that are more than just starting over, and identify what, if anything, needs fixing in your story. Whether you’re halfway through your first book, or stuck revising your tenth, this workshop helps you complete those unfinished projects. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram

  • In this class we will revisit the main building blocks of your memoir as well as hone the essential skill sets needed to complete your first draft. We will pay special attention to your structure, character arc and scene writing. We will also cover How to Write a Book Proposal in the last session of the class. Since the former sessions work on learning individual skill sets (think one melody at a time), this class is vital to assist the writer in learning how to use all of the skill sets at once for a first draft (think symphony). Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self. We will be using the textbook "7 Essential Writing Tools," which is available for purchase on the first day of class for $10 or on Amazon/Kindle. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram
  • A book proposal is an equation: a business case married with a marketing plan that you submit to publishers. In this workshop, students will learn the full spectrum of writing a first-draft proposal: what to include, what to leave out, faux pas to avoid, how to structure your proposal in a professional format, and how to demonstrate to publishers that you’re a serious writer who understands the 21st-century publishing landscape. Each week, students will write one draft section of their proposal. They will receive weekly critique on their drafts from the instructor, and they will also workshop sections with one another as partners or in small groups. Students should have a completed or in-progress nonfiction manuscript and be comfortable using Word, Google Docs, or Scrivener. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram

  • The genre of short story is an art unto itself. In this course, we’ll take our cue from acclaimed short story collections from authors such as Jhumpa Lahiri and Flannery O’Connor and practice weaving tight and entire short-form narratives. In a typical class, we’ll spend 10-15 minutes examining a text, and use that as a launching point to generate during the remainder of the time. Texts: - "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri - "A Good Man is Hard to Find: And Other Stories" by Flannery O’Connor - "Pastoralia" by George Saunders San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram
  • Do you love jazz-pop artist Laufey? Did you know that she leads a book club? Well, now you can be a part of the Lauver book club community! Each session, be prepared to come ready to discuss one of Laufey’s picks––typically fiction with a whimsical bent. We’ll identify craft elements we love and discuss implementing those components in our own practices. This group will discuss one book per session, and will meet once every two months. Our first book will be "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahirim, which we will discuss on August 5. The book is available at this link on Amazon, but we appreciate if you obtain it through your local book store or borrow it from your local library. San Diego Writers, Ink on Facebook / Instagram
