On this 3 mile, easy-paced book club run, we explore several of the institutions and public places funded by Ellen Browning Scripps’ philanthropy. It wasn’t until 1900, when she was 61 years old, that she moved to La Jolla and would begin her philanthropic endeavors. The New York Times estimates she gave over $44 million in 2023 dollars before she died in 1932. A champion of many causes, Scripps funded institutions to support women’s education, the labor movement, and public access to science, the arts, and education. Visions Museum of Textile Art (VMOTA), a non-profit organization that celebrates and advances contemporary quilting and textile art, proudly hosts its inaugural Threads of Time fundraiser event that will be held at its museum that is located in the Arts District Liberty Station. On Saturday, April 26, 2025, the public is invited to participate in this event which is more than just a fundraiser; it is an opportunity to come together as a community, experience the creativity of wearable art, and connect over shared stories, food, and laughter. The event will include the following: · A Wearable Art Show, featuring garments inspired by historical events and reimagined for modern expression. · A Hands-On Art Engagement, where community members can create and explore textile art firsthand. · A lively atmosphere of gathering over delicious food and drinks, fostering meaningful connections. · Silent and Live Auctions, showcasing a stunning collection of artwork, experiences, and exclusive items, all to support our goal of raising necessary funds to empower artists and sustain our mission. Assistance League of Greater San Diego will hold its annual Treasure Bazaar on March 29 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and March 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. We are located at 108 University in Hillcrest. COMMUNITY SUPPORT – We provide clothing and supplies to unhoused people (both children and adults), victims of domestic abuse, foster youth, refugee families, community resource centers, and victims of emergencies such as floods and fires. ENRICHING FOSTER YOUTH – We help to expose foster youth to the arts with a focus on visual arts, music and performing arts in local venues by partnering with local foster organizations. BOOK BUDDIES – We assist students to become lifelong learners by collaborating with their teachers to encourage reading by practicing reading either in person or online in a one on one or group setting. OPERATION LOANER HEARING AID – We provide short term loaner hearing aids for newborns to young adults up to 21 who are waiting for replacements which can take 6 months. We also provide long term use for low-income families and children with significant hearing loss. We partner with San Diego United School District (East and South Counties) and SDSU Audiology Department. SNEAKERS FOR MILITARY PRESCHOOLERS – We provide sneakers, Bombas socks, sweatshirts, pants, pajamas, sunsuits and jackets for children of enlisted military personnel in partnership with STEP (Support the Enlisted Program). TWAIN HIGH SCHOOL – We provide recognition events to support students in this alternative high school program on the main campus, Mira Mesa, Morse, Crawford and Hoover High School campuses. We also provide financial scholarship support for students attending one of San Diego’s community colleges. UPPER DIVISION SCHOLARSHIPS – We provide scholarships for fulltime students who have completed community college and are transitioning to an accredited college or university in pursuit of a four-year degree or continuing in those community colleges that offer baccalaureate degrees.
