The 1931 landmark case Roberto Alvarez vs. the Board of Trustees of the Lemon Grove School District was the first successful school desegregation court decision in the history of the United States. This lecture by Dr. Robert R. Alvarez Jr. will review the specific struggle by the Mexican families of Lemon Grove in the greater context of the Mexican challenge to U.S. school desegregation. The Lemon Grove case illustrates the long-term educational and civil rights struggle for justice by Mexican Immigrants. The case established the rights of their children to equal education, despite local, regional and national sentiment that favored not only segregation, but the actual deportation of the Mexican population in the United States. Current educational equity issues for Mexican immigrant and Chicanx/Latinx communities will be contextualized through regional data compiled by the National Latino Research Center (NLRC). This lecture will also mark the release an NLRC report on Latinx Educational Equity relevant to communities and educators alike. Maoli, referred to as Hawaii and Polynesia’s No. 1 independent commercial recording artist, has transcended borders with their extraordinary talent, capturing the hearts of music enthusiasts worldwide. The band, which is fronted by Glenn Awong, formed in 2007 and has since performed across the U.S., New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. Each year, Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed to memorialize those who lost their lives in acts of anti-trans violence.

This group exhibition showcases recent works by the talented faculty and staff of the Fine Art department. The artwork on display highlights the creativity and dedication of instructors and staff, who find the time to pursue their studio practice. The exhibit includes an array of traditional and contemporary media, such as painting, photography, installation, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, and more.
