Create a unique Bandsaw Box! Saturday, February 22, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Bandsaw boxes are beginner-friendly and have a variety of uses. Once you make one you can make many! In this 7-hour workshop, students will create a box made from a single block of wood using the bandsaw. Students will learn to design and create organic forms on the bandsaw while observing wood grain and learning to make cross cuts and rip cuts. We will cover shop safety and methods for cutting and gluing your box. Students will also learn sanding best practices and how to achieve a perfect finish using beeswax. We welcome all makers, from beginners to advanced. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring your own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Learn to weave on a Tapestry Loom! Saturdays, February 22, March 1 & 8, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Have you always been intrigued by beautiful handwoven textiles, wanted to understand how they were made, and maybe learn this ancient craft? Then this is a class for you. In this 3-day workshop (over three weeks), you will be introduced to the age-old practice of weaving and discover the rewarding aspect of creating objects for useful or decorative purpose. Weaving can also be a meditative parenthesis in our fast-paced world. You will learn the basic weaving techniques needed to set you on your weaver’s journey such as: – How to warp a tapestry loom – Plain tapestry weave (single and double weft tapestry) – Weft interlock and slit weave – Weft-faced color blending – Turkish knots (if we have sufficient time). We will weave a sampler and a final project representing different learned techniques. Students will work on a vertical tapestry loom (18”×24”) which can be taken home each week to practice and work on the project assigned. A variety of yarn will be available. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn, as well as a heavy metal fork to use as beater to pack the weft threads down. A security deposit of $50 will be required at the beginning of the class for the loan of the loom during the duration of the class. Learn to Weave! Join us for an afternoon of fiber friendship and camaraderie. Weaving is an ancient craft; it shelters and clothes as well as adorns our spaces, adding texture, color, design and inspiration to our lives. And it is the actual process of weaving, along with selecting fibers, natural objects; guiding weft through the vertical foundation of warp strings; creating pattern/texture as the process unfolds…these steps continue to connect us with the past, and more importantly, with ourselves. Join in this weaving workshop as we weave intuitively and work together in a space of creativity and openness. Instructor Jeanine Ertl will provide guidance in a variety of weaving techniques and will surround you with warped looms to work on, tools to learn with, natural fibers, and foraged and gathered natural objects to incorporate into your weavings. Feel free to bring your own items to weave into your piece, especially if there are any fibers/yarns, stones/crystals, shells, leaves/grasses, etc. that you’d like to experiment with. Each weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind woven textile. We’ll have rods on hand for those who would like to adapt their pieces into wall hangings. And, if you find that you’re in love with the practice, you’ll have an option to purchase the loom you are working with, as well as additional fiber and tools to continue at home. Twill-Dee-Dee! Saturday, February 15, from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. Learn how to make this attractive round basket that incorporates several important basketry skills. You’ll start with a round slotted wooden base, insert spokes, and then begin weaving. Techniques included are: twining, twill weave, 3-Rod wale, continuous over-under, and a matchstick rim. Color choices for the twill section will be available. The basket measures about 6” x 6”. Add a flower embellishment if you wish. Makes a great plant holder, napkin holder, or just as a stand alone piece. Students: Please bring sturdy scissors & an old towel if you can! No experience necessary. Make Tiny Ceramics! Join me in the land of miniatures. You will learn how and get to create tiny pottery on a mini pottery wheel. No previous pottery experience necessary! In this 2-hour class, you will learn to create 1-3 tiny pots and can add some color if you would like to. You will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is less intimidating and is an accessible way to throw and center clay. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery! This class includes clay, under glazing and firing of the clay. The clay cannot be taken home at the time of the class because it must be kiln fired. The turn around is 1-2 weeks for drying, glazing, and firing before you pick up your miniature creations. Learn to Warp & Weave! February 8, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (w/1 hr lunch break) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a sustainably harvested wooden Rigid Heddle Loom and soft natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, instructor Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. Absolute Beginner Crochet: Getting Starting! Tuesdays, February 4, 11 & 18, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. In this crochet workshop, students will learn the fundamental skills of crochet, including starting a project, basic stitches, and tying off. This three-week course will allow students to learn the basics, practice at home, and then return with their questions and learn more. No experience necessary. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn and/or hook, but it is not necessary. We will be using size 4 yarn and between 4.00mm and 6.00mm crochet hooks. In this class you will make a gorgeous, shaped belt bag perfect for your own adventures or gifting. The skills taught in this class include: how to sew darts; sewing a lined welt zip; bias binding; and bag hardware installation. This bag is highly customizable. You will go home with the pattern and ready to practice new bag making skills. An alternative to the webbing strap could be repurposing an old belt, or from a bag you no longer use. Thrift stores are full of interesting belts and hardware to harvest from bags! This class is appropriate for a sewer with knowledge of how to use a sewing machine and sewing basics. A drawing's most profound potential lies in its ability to shape how we perceive and understand the world around us. Few means of expression can rival its directness. Drawing is personal, immediate, intentional, and reveals an artist’s presence of mind. The Judith Harris Art Gallery at the Central Library is pleased to present The Drawing Show, a 25th anniversary exhibition championing skilled San Diego artists. The Visual Arts Program founder, Mark Elliot Lugo, curated the first inaugural Drawing Show which has included over 92 local artists in invitationals over the years. Lugo believed drawing is not just a skill, but an exercise in teaching the eye to “see” correctly— a process that transcends mere observation and encourages a deeper, more insightful perception. This year’s invitational features Celeste Byers, Hugo Crosthwaite, Steve Gibson, Amanda Kazemi, Neil Kendricks, Joshua Morino, Annalise Neil, David Peña, Melanie Taylor, and Eden de la Vara—ten local artists who show us how they “see” through their exemplary mark making. From traditional figure renderings to imaginative constructs of landscape and abstraction, drawing remains a space of open experimentation, where the hand decides whether a piece is meant to convey deeper meaning or exist for mere play. Each mark sends a message—where past, present, and futures coexist. The Drawing Show invites the viewer to engage with drawing as more than just a tool or technique—it's a vital method of communication. A narrative serving a profound social function.
