Join us for a special Art Break with Dawn Williams Boyd, a celebrated visual storyteller whose richly layered textile work, "Piscean Dancer," is featured in "Layered Narratives - Quilted Stories of Gender and Race at the 1876 Centennial." A working artist for over five decades as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, Boyd brings deep personal experience and fierce conviction to every piece she creates. In this talk, she’ll reflect on her creative journey, from discovering her calling in a high school biology lab to finding her voice through fabric, inspired in part by the legendary Faith Ringgold. Free Teen Art is a free program for teens, who are interested in art-making as an enrichment activity that goes beyond making crafts. The aim of the program is to provide a space for youth to create art, share stories, collaborate, explore, and identify new ways to use art in their lives. The Athenaeum offers facilities, resources, guidance, instruction, and support. The open studio program includes a rotation of multidisciplinary art instructors offering workshops in their respective fields, as well as curricular activities that involve the use of the Athenaeum library resources as a starting point for projects. Activities include drawing, painting, research, and introduction to various media. Canada Kerwin has worked as a K–Grade 2 art volunteer since 2005, creating age-appropriate lessons that include introduction to art theory and artists’ biographies and tie-in to curricula as needed. Retired from the healthcare field, Canada also served in the US Navy. She applies her background experience to her ongoing art studies at Mira Costa College, focusing on the human form through life drawing and sculpture. "FREEDOM RIDERS: The Civil Rights Musical" tells the true story of the 1961 activists who boldly challenged the legality and optics of the segregated Jim Crow south by riding buses in mixed racial groups. It features civil rights icons John Lewis and Diane Nash, famed newspaper editor John Seigenthaler, Robert Kennedy and and the courageous and diverse riders of the Civil Rights Movement. Nonprofit art space The Hill Street Country Club, founded in 2012, has served as a hub for art, music and community. The gallery's final exhibit, Marisa DeLuca's "What Goes Up Must Come Down," is a study of Oceanside's lost or abandoned buildings — and the grief therein.

“'The Space Between': Texture Studies by Denja Harris explores the tension between control and surrender, seeking meaning in the space between what is and what is becoming. Through large-scale yarn paintings, soft sculptures, and video, I investigate how texture, form, color, and pattern evoke sensory and emotional responses. Each piece invites viewers to engage with the interplay of softness and structure and to find significance within the undefined spaces. This work mirrors our collective human experience, an ongoing navigation of uncertainty, patience, and becoming. In this way, absence holds as much weight as presence. This exhibition is about approaching the unknown with curiosity rather than resistance and using improvisation as both an initiation and a response. Layering and repetition are prominent throughout my work, reinforcing the cyclical nature of change and the unfolding process of becoming.
