Devastating droughts, floods, skies of fire, murderous crowds, and a prophet's lone footsteps through a land of uncertainty and self-doubt. Mendelssohn's oratorios certainly skirted the line between opera and sacred music, but his depiction of the prophet Elijah is unique in its epic dramatic power. The celebrated pipa performer Wu Man joins the orchestra for a world premiere by UCSD faculty member Lei Liang. In the second half, the past is unraveled, from the complexity of Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone music to the lush voice of his brother-in-law, Alexander Zemlinsky, and finally culminating in the rarely-heard original version of Schumann’s Symphony no. 4, a masterpiece of the Romantic era. Anna Thorvaldsdottir's METACOSMOS plunges the listener into a vast maelstrom of cosmic forces tugging in all directions until finally colliding into what the composer calls unified chaos, followed by George Walker's Lyric for Strings and Margaret Bonds' The Montgomery Variations. The concert will conclude with John Adams's profound and reflective masterpiece, On the Transmigration of Souls, written in the year following the September 11 attacks in New York City. With the natural world serving as a recurring metaphor in her compositions, Gabriella Smith's sonically imaginative piece, Bioluminescence Chaconne, sets the stage for our program. Acclaimed soloist Nancy Zhou shares her mesmerizing virtuosity in Vivian Fung's gamelan-inspired Violin Concerto No. 1. In the latter half of the performance, the La Jolla Symphony Chorus joins the orchestra, presenting a vibrant selection of French masterpieces by Debussy, Fauré, and Ravel. Famed Chicano performance troupe Culture Clash, featuring Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas and Herbert Siguenza, proudly returns to San Diego for one special performance celebrating the group’s 40th Anniversary. “Culture Clash’s 40th Anniversary Desmadre” is an all-new show in honor of 40 years of comedy that will serve up an explosive cocktail of humor and satirical outrage. Through residencies across the city in the 1990s and 2000s, this eclectic group of California natives became a favorite for many San Diego theatre and comedy fans, developing a large diverse loyal fan base. “Their comedy can be rude, crude, witty, refined, pointed and highbrow, often within the same sketch. Their shows are driven with broad strokes of sweeping yet topical satire penetrating their targets every moment they take the stage” writes The San Jose Mercury News. They will be joined by longtime friend collaborator Kirk Ward and hilarious standup comedian Mala Muñoz. Pianist Michael Roth will accompany Culture Clash throughout the evening.
