Learn Basketry Basics! Saturday, October 10, 1-5 p.m. Beginners welcome! Ages 16+years! This class is perfect for anyone new to basket weaving! In this 4 hour workshop, Instructor Marsha Orr will guide you as you learn to create a beautiful woven bowl while learning essential techniques like working with a wooden slotted base, twining, twill weave, and finishing with a matchstick rim. You’ll choose from several gorgeous dyed reeds, and all you need to bring is an old towel and sturdy scissors; a spray bottle is helpful but optional. Your finished basket will be approximately 5″ wide by 5″ high. No experience necessary. While using drawings, words and numbers to observe the plants and organic garden at San Diego Craft Collective, students will also learn how these techniques can play a role in mental health, attention management, community science, transferable skill-building and behavior change. Through material analysis, architectural investigation, conservation techniques, and stories from preservation specialists, the exhibition reveals how historic buildings act as physical archives of craftsmanship, trade, design, and community life. Using Wisteria Cottage alongside regional and national examples, the exhibition invites visitors to see preservation not simply as restoration, but as discovery: peeling back layers of paint, wood, plaster, and history to better understand the people and ideas that shaped the built environment. San Diego Public Library officials announced Tuesday they are teaming up Google to offer free career advancement courses for county residents wanting to improve their workforce skills.

This class is designed for teens who want to learn machine sewing skills to explore making their own clothes. Instructor & Sewist Joan Mathison will guide students as they gain confidence using a sewing machine; practice essential techniques like seam finishes, hems, and zippers; and explore how to read and follow a garment pattern. Along the way, teens will work on beginner-friendly garment projects that build real sewing skills and result in wearable pieces. Whether you’re dreaming of making your own wardrobe, customizing thrift finds, or simply learning a valuable skill, this class will give your teen the tools and knowledge to get started. Saturday, October 17, from 10:30 a.m. -1p.m. The seasons are changing, and it’s a beautiful time of year to celebrate by creating whimsical fused glass art for your garden or windows! Your bright and cheerful sun catchers and garden sticks will make your garden, indoor potted plants, or windows sparkle! Instructor Suzanne Balestri will guide you in glass cutting techniques an design considerations to create your own artful creations to compliment your garden or to display in a sunny window. You will also receive two instructional videos a few days before the workshop so you’ll have a head start on what to expect. Students can make up to 3 pieces measuring approximately 1.5” x 11” each. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at Craft Collective approximately 2-3 weeks after class. All materials are included, including 2 pre-class video instructions, and materials and firing for 3 glass pieces. Additional pieces can be made in class for $5 each (payable with cash in class).
