  • Journey through the remarkable music of Kurt Weill with famous songs, such as “Alabama Song” and “Mack the Knife,” and the not so well-known yet equally brilliant. Featuring performances by mezzo-soprano Tzytle Steinman, mezzo-soprano Danielle Perrault, baritone Jonathan Nussman, and bass Walter DuMelle, with music directors Yewon Lee (piano) and Mark Danisovszky (accordion). In keeping with BTC’s mission to support other nonprofits in the San Diego area, all profits from the Kurt Weill Cabaret will benefit The Monarch School. Kurt Weill was a German-born American composer who was a proponent of writing music that served a socially useful purpose. With the rise of Hitler, he fled Berlin to Paris in 1933, then onto the United States. During his time on Broadway he produced several popular musicals before landing in Hollywood, writing numerous scores for movie musicals. He also wrote several works for the concert hall and the operatic stage. Apart from “Mack the Knife” and “Pirate Jenny” from The Threepenny Opera, some of his most famous songs include “Surabaya Johnny,” “Speak Low,” “Lost in the Stars,” “Lonely House,” and “September Song” all of which will be sung on the cabaret. • R.B. STEVENSON GALLERY is delighted to announce its upcoming exhibition, "Forest Bathing," showcasing a stunning collection of new paintings by San Diego-Los Angeles artist Jeanne Dunn. We would like to invite you to join us and meet the artist at the opening reception on Saturday September 7 from 5 - 8 p.m. Forest Bathing is the title of this new body of work because it relates to my current paintings and the motives behind their creation. The phrase comes from Japan, where the practice of shinrin-yoku, or literally “forest-bath,” is the name for the time-honored practice of walking in the woods for its benefits to the mind and body, a departure from one’s cares. My bold colors and semi-realistic forms take their cue from this idea of immersion in sensations and individual experiences of an arboreal place. By offering the unexpected in form, shape, and color, these tree-filled “scenes” aim to challenge our assumptions of what we might see along a wilderness trail. They express the joy of abandoning the familiar and encountering a new world that is vibrant, animated, and perhaps mysterious. • The Six String Society’s Celestial Sirens production is ready to dazzle Oceanside on Sept. 7 with several of San Diego’s most celebrated performers! This eclectic show, set in a “Living Room,” mixes some playful theater along with music ranging from soul, blues, and jazz all hosted by Sir Robert Parker. As the show unfolds, each of the Sirens take the stage to perform their own unique style of music featuring the electric Whitney Shay, (a four-time San Diego Music Award winner and Performer of the Year in 2019) who will light up the night’s sky with her powerful, soulful voice and her fun loving personality. We are also very excited to bring in San Diego Jazz icon Rebecca Jade making her long awaited Six String Society debut. For years she has toured the world with international stars including Sheila E, Dave Koz, and Elton John, but on Sept. 7th she will share the stage with Whitney and Taryn for the very first time! Over the years Jade has won multiple San Diego Music Awards including ‘Song of the Year’ in 2021 and Performer of the Year in 2020! Also, in the mix will be two-time San Diego Music Award winner Taryn Donath! She’s a true force on piano ranging from jazz to soul! Talk about a show stopper! Like all Six String Society productions there will be other special guests along with their collaborative All Star jam in the show’s finale.
