This 4-week, repeatable series is perfect for kids who love to make things! Children learn tool safety, and get acquainted with various woodworking hand tools and techniques. They learn about wood as a material, and how to properly glue, hammer nails, and use manual drills. The goal of this class is to build children’s confidence through woodcraft. The focus for younger children is creating patience, developing fine motor skills, material exploration, and safe, proper use of the tools. More mature students will increase their focus to include craftsmanship, and more challenging methods of building projects and problem solving. We will work together in the same space, but age groups/projects will be divided into two groups based on age and level of maturity. This class uses mostly hand tools. We teach safe methods for sawing, drilling, and clamping wood in this class. We encourage children to disconnect from screen-time conversations and video game thinking during our time together. This is a time for children to slow down, figure out tools, how they work, and make functional objects with their own hands. Occasionally, we use a plug-in tool with students (like a drill press). These machines are used 1-on-1 with students and instructors. If you prefer your child not use plug-in tools, just let us know! Students are guided through a series of steps that exercise hand-eye coordination, problem solving, and creativity. Students make fun, high-quality projects to take home. All materials are included. In this month-long series, kids learn a wide variety of traditional crafts from professional artist-educators. Creating with one’s hands and imagination with thoughtful and engaging crafts allows your child to express themselves in a creative way. They’ll build fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and grow an understanding of a variety of materials from textiles and clay to wood. This nurturing learning environment makes space for each child to develop their own unique artistic style. Projects encourage problem solving through imaginative and innovative ways, using foundations in the craft realm: wood, fiber, clay, paper, found objects, and glass. Welcome to Craft Collective’s Organic Garden Club for kids! It’s a weekly space where kids may enjoy a harvest-culinary-prepared treat as they learn all about plot planning, companion planting, organic gardening maintenance, harvesting, seed saving, composting, and activities that progress the garden with each season. Garden Club gives kids an opportunity to become good stewards of the garden as they see firsthand the impact of their efforts. And this school year, each meeting will include a half hour of garden-related crafting, followed by plenty of time in the garden! Gardening is proven to have a positive, grounding impact on mood and brain chemistry for all ages, but especially for children. Working in the garden helps kids grow & expand in so many ways! Kids practice and hone fine motor skills; use their five senses to learn about their environment; get excited about food and making healthy, nutritious choices; and feel connected to a larger picture and purpose in life. When we grow our own food, we are all more connected to it, and kids are especially more apt to eat things they’ve grown themselves in the garden! Our organic & edible garden is a wonderful space we’ve developed to teach the community about how gardening in a small space can be quite abundant. The garden hosts several varieties of organic fresh fruits, herbs and vegetables, and is maintained by Craft Collective and super-gardener and educator Mia Vaughnes, of Good Neighbor Gardens.
