Her visionary programming showcases luminaries like Kennedy Yanko, Swoon, Derrick Adams and Bisa Butler. A notable alumna of Christie’s Education Art Business program, Mashonda skillfully merges her passions for music, art, and entrepreneurship. She has fostered impactful collaborations with initiatives like Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD and Gucci’s Chime for Change, as well as esteemed institutions such as The Whitney Museum and PAMM. Additionally, she has curated exhibitions for galleries and art fairs across the globe. "A Tale of Two Cities" is a collaborative exhibition between Sparks Gallery in San Diego and bG Gallery in Santa Monica: two art galleries connected by the same coastline, and shaped individually by their respective cities’ rhythms, energies, and audiences. Through this collaborative partnership exhibit, Southern California artists and internationally collected artists represented by each gallery will be on view in each other’s gallery for a limited showing. On view from January 7– February 7 in both galleries, the works are curated toward the partner gallery’s audience, and each celebrates the spirit of dialogue, play, and shared imagination that can flourish when two art worlds meet. For this gallery swap, Sparks Gallery brings to bG Gallery a vibrant selection of works by four San Diegan artists whose practices embrace bold color, pop-influenced social commentary, and meditations about the world around them. Their pieces pulse with dynamic linework, layered symbolism, and speak to the collecting style of bG Gallery’s diverse, ambitious, and maverick collectors. Philip Petrie and Jim Richerson have been in dialogue about art and museum installations for over 30 years but this is the first time these two artists have exhibited together. Both are interested in ambiguities of meaning and form and how these ambiguities can yield new meanings. Richerson, a sculptor, has created a whole series of works around the word “if” which play with scale and materials (including mirrors) to express the possibilities implied in that word. The pieces are concrete and formally precise but suggest a slippage in terms of identity and, with that, humor. Petrie’s black and white drawings are part of a series he calls “Epic Fail” which reference our troubled times. He tackles political, religious, and personal elements which are translated into dream images that are dark, surrealistic, and abstracted. Showing together both artists hope to point out similarities and differences between the works which deepen the viewers’ experience and reference the particular hinge moment that we live in. “Life is Art, Paint your Dreams” This creative workshop will provide all supplies and direction for creating your very own vision board collage. The beginning of a new year is always a great time to get clear on our goals and plans and start the process of manifesting what we want in our lives. In this workshop we will use the medium of collage to create your very own unique vision board, a collection of images and words that will be both a reminder and an inspiration for you to stick to your goals and create your dreams. To create our stunning artworks, I will provide an imaginative and thoughtfully curated selection of national geographic magazines as well as magazines from a variety of genres, including nature, yoga, outdoors, adventure, astrology, home & Gardens and more. Class will begin with a few minutes of meditation and journaling to set the inspiration and thoughts in motion before we enjoy browsing through magazines to collect our imagery.
