Monday, August 12, 2024 12 p.m. Patrick Hadley plays, creates, and manufactures an African thumb piano called a “mbira” or “kalimba.” The Array mbira is a highly modernized version of an ancient African instrument. In Zimbabwe they are known as mbiras, however, these types of plucked metal tine instruments are known by many names, such as likembe, sanza, kalimba, and, simply, thumb pianos. Patrick and his business partner, the inventor of the array mbira, Bill Wesley, have been building these instruments for over 30 years. They are fully chromatic and play in every key, up to six octaves. Many professional musicians are using these instruments and they can be heard in several major motion picture soundtracks as well as songs by Taylor Swift and many others including Sting, Imogen Heap, RyCooder, Pharaoh Sanders, and others. Patrick's music has been heard on NPR, and one of his videos reached a staggering 22 million views! Free concerts at noon every Monday year-round . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles. . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk, and world music. There are no reservations, no tickets . . . just line up at the side door of the Athenaeum before noon. (Donations are always welcome!) Mini-Concerts take place every Monday at noon and last about an hour. The concerts will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for these events. October 19, 2024 – January 11, 2025 Opening Reception: Friday, October 18, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. JOSEPH CLAYES III & ROTUNDA GALLERIES CARLOS CASTRO ARIAS: THE SPLINTER IN THE EYE Carlos Castro Arias will be exhibiting his newest project, The Splinter in the Eye, an installation composed of paintings and objects in which the artist reflects about memory, trauma, and elements of the individual and collective identity. Carlos Castro Arias is a Colombian artist, professor, and musician. He received a BA from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogota in 2002 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2008 to the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received an MFA in painting in 2010. Castro has been an associate professor at San Diego State University since 2019. In 2022, the Museo Universitario Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia exhibited a retrospective of his work entitled La Vida de las Cosas Muertas (The Life of Dead Things). Most recently Castro Arias has exhibited at Artpace, San Antonio; Bread & Salt, San Diego; LA Galería, Bogota; Quint Gallery, La Jolla, and Espacio El Dorado, Bogota. He has participated in group shows in Sweden, Peru, France, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Venezuela. His musical projects include: POPO (2000), Los Claudios de Colombia (2005-2010) and Amor Negro (2020). The artist lives and works between San Diego, Tijuana, and Bogota. Join Quint Gallery this Saturday morning from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. to celebrate our summer shows in La Jolla, including an array of recent sculptures and early drawings by Kenneth Capps, prints by Don Hughes and a new work by Bread & Salt's resident artist Brandon Secrest at 7655 Girard Avenue. Nancy Blum: Gathered is on view at 7722 Girard Avenue. Kenneth Capps received his MFA at the University of California, San Diego in 1975, during which his work was acquired by the Storm King Art Center in upstate New York. His work is now featured in permanent collections internationally, including the the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego and the Port of San Diego, Bayside Park in Chula Vista, CA; the Palm Springs Art Museum; the Oakland Museum Of California; the Museum of Modern Art in New York; and the Alfred Schmela Sculpture Park in Dusseldorf, Germany, among many others. Capps has received several grants and awards, including The Engelhard Award, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and two Pollock/Krasner foundation grants. Many of his sculptures are sited on a 40-acre sculpture park built by the artist in Warner Springs, CA. -- Nancy Blum received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and has since become a widely sought-after visiting artist, critic, and lecturer at universities nationwide. Her work has also been recognized through fellowships from the Pollock‐Krasner Foundation, Peter S. Reed Foundation, Mid‐Atlantic Arts Foundation, and New York’s Lower East Side Printshop. The first monograph of her work was published in 2017 and features essays, interviews and documentation of her drawing, sculpture, and public artworks. Nancy lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
