  • Learn the Art of Intarsia Woodworking! Sunday, August 9, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Join us in the woodshop for this 5-hour intarsia woodworking workshop! Intarsia is a woodworking technique that involves the use of varied shapes of wood to create an image or pattern. In this class, we will cover shop safety and how to use a scroll saw, as well as best practices for sanding and finishing. Students will choose from a template to transfer to their wood, creating a mosaic-like decorative wall piece. Template options will be provided, and may be altered and edited based on skill level. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with their own intarsia project. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron, but we have some for borrow if needed. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome.   • Learn to Sew & Hem! This class is a continuation of the Family and Beginner Sewing 101. In this next series, Instructor Hannah Gioutlos will guide you through the process of sewing a drawstring backpack. We will learn how to place our pattern on your fabric and cut it out with scissors or a rotary cutter. Then we will show tips on using a seam gauge to find the hem allowance. Next we will learn the proper way to press our fabric into place to get ready for hemming. For students who complete this project early, you can also learn to sew a pet bandana for your furry friends. REQUIREMENT: If you are new to using a sewing machine, you must take Family & Beginner Sewing 101 | Sewing Machine Basics first. In order to enroll in 102, a student must know how to thread and use a/their sewing machine and be comfortable with beginner sewing techniques. FABRIC CHOICE: All materials are included. If you’d like to bring your own fabric to sew with, students must bring at minimum a half yard or two fat quarters of 100% cotton quilting or cotton canvas. Cotton jersey and stretchy fabrics will not be sewn in this class. MACHINE CHOICE: It’s ideal to bring your own sewing machine for this class, but you may also borrow and learn on one of ours. Please note if bringing your own sewing machine it is very important to make sure it is fully functional. No experience necessary. Materials included. Ages 12+ years are welcome. Ages 7+ must attend with an adult to assist! ***If you’re attending with your child, and participating only as support, just purchase 1 space. If you both will learn and create a project side-by-side, please purchase 2 spaces. Please be punctual to this class.   • Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour scroll saw skills woodworking workshop! In this scroll saw for beginners class, students will learn the basics of getting started in the hobby. A list of the tools and supplies needed will be provided, along with a description of the blade types and samples of items that can be made with them. Students will also cover a brief overview of cutting techniques, and tips for success at home. We will then go through four hands-on exercises, to help build your skill set and become comfortable using a scroll saw. You will practice cutting curves, sharp turns and straight lines. Afterwards we progress through the steps and learn new techniques alongthe way. You will leave with the items you make throughout the day. Pictured is the final exercise which uses all of the previous skills practiced earlier to complete it. Materials are provided.   • Dye with Fresh Indigo Natural Dye in Bonita! Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. There are many ways of dyeing with indigo, but its magic can be experienced in its most direct way by simply using fresh indigo leaves, water, and air! This workshop is a unique opportunity to work with indigo from the “ground up” and understand the beautiful chemistry of indigo and create a beautiful silk scarf in the setting it was grown. This workshop is held at an off-site location, at the inspirational Ranchito Milkyway farm in Bonita. This class is appropriate for ages 12+ years old or 8+yrs with an accompanying adult.   • Weave a Silk Wall Hanging or Decorative Silk Square! Saturday, August 15, from 1-5 p.m. Beginners welcome! Learn to weave with colorful recycled sari silk in this hands-on, weaving workshop! Weaver, Dyer Jeanine Ertl will guide students through a variety of weaving techniques on warped lap looms using a rainbow of silk ribbon and yarn fibers to ignite the imagination. You’ll learn and play with the basics of the process from start to finish, each creating a unique handwoven that can be hung or draped, according to your desires. Please feel free to bring any items you may want to incorporate into your weaving, like interesting fibers, foraged and gathered natural objects, shells with holes, beads, etc. Each Weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind silk textile that can be hung as a Wall Hanging or finished as a square and used in a variety of creative ways. In addition, if you find that you’re in love with the practice, you will have an option to purchase the loom you are working with, as well as additional fiber and tools to continue at home. Come explore mindfully making in a space of creativity & harmony with others. No experience necessary.   • Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour kumiko skill-building workshop! Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodworking technique of assembling individual pieces of wood, without the use of nails, into geometric patterns. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, Instructor Michael Olin guides students as they learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here.
