Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour scroll saw skills woodworking workshop! In this scroll saw for beginners class, students will learn the basics of getting started in the hobby. A list of the tools and supplies needed will be provided, along with a description of the blade types and samples of items that can be made with them. Students will also cover a brief overview of cutting techniques, and tips for success at home. We will then go through four hands-on exercises, to help build your skill set and become comfortable using a scroll saw. You will practice cutting curves, sharp turns and straight lines. Afterwards we progress through the steps and learn new techniques alongthe way. You will leave with the items you make throughout the day. Pictured is the final exercise which uses all of the previous skills practiced earlier to complete it. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron, but we have some for borrow if needed. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Dye with Fresh Indigo Natural Dye in Bonita! Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. There are many ways of dyeing with indigo, but its magic can be experienced in its most direct way by simply using fresh indigo leaves, water, and air! This workshop is a unique opportunity to work with indigo from the “ground up” and understand the beautiful chemistry of indigo and create a beautiful silk scarf in the setting it was grown. This workshop is held at an off-site location, at the inspirational Ranchito Milkyway farm in Bonita. This class is appropriate for ages 12+ years old or 8+yrs with an accompanying adult. Weave a Silk Wall Hanging or Decorative Silk Square! Saturday, August 15, from 1-5 p.m. Beginners welcome! Learn to weave with colorful recycled sari silk in this hands-on, weaving workshop! Weaver, Dyer Jeanine Ertl will guide students through a variety of weaving techniques on warped lap looms using a rainbow of silk ribbon and yarn fibers to ignite the imagination. You’ll learn and play with the basics of the process from start to finish, each creating a unique handwoven that can be hung or draped, according to your desires. Please feel free to bring any items you may want to incorporate into your weaving, like interesting fibers, foraged and gathered natural objects, shells with holes, beads, etc. Each Weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind silk textile that can be hung as a Wall Hanging or finished as a square and used in a variety of creative ways. In addition, if you find that you’re in love with the practice, you will have an option to purchase the loom you are working with, as well as additional fiber and tools to continue at home. Come explore mindfully making in a space of creativity & harmony with others. No experience necessary. Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodworking technique of assembling individual pieces of wood, without the use of nails, into geometric patterns. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, Instructor Michael Olin guides students as they learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. Beginners welcome! Join us for this 3-hour workshop, as you learn to handcraft your own unique kumihimo bracelet. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese artform and craftwork for making braids and cords. In the past, kumihimo decorations were used as accessories for kimono as well as samurai armor. Literally meaning gathered threads, kumihimo are made by interlacing reels of yarn, commonly silk, with the use of traditional, specialized looms. With the advent of an inexpensive handheld loom, you can make bracelets and necklaces affordably and easily.
