Cool down on a summer evening and come to North City for a free movie night showcasing Disney’s "Frozen." On Friday, June 7, movie lovers are invited to gather at North City’s plaza to watch the family-favorite movie and enjoy special appearances from themed movie characters, Elsa and Anna. The fun kicks off with games, family activities, and themed character meet-and-greets at 5 p.m., followed by the movie screening at 6:30 p.m. Limited seating will be available, but everyone is encouraged to bring low chairs and blankets to create a cozy movie viewing experience in the open air pop-up theater. Movie goers will receive complimentary popcorn and can purchase an array of bites from North City’s eateries. About the exhibit: Featuring artwork by Alexa Vasquez, this exhibition will highlight the experiences of undocumented queer immigrants that migrated to the U.S. as children and came of age in the country. As undocumented queer immigrants, they experience a double marginalization in which they must navigate both xenophobic and homophobic violence. Their queer identities marginalize them within undocumented immigrant communities, who frequently hold homophobic beliefs. Similarly, their undocumented status excludes them from many queer communities, who are often opposed to undocumented immigration despite their otherwise liberal politics. Consequently, undocumented queer immigrants cautiously and strategically choose how and when to be out about their sexuality and/or immigration status. While this double marginality undoubtedly positions undocumented queer immigrants as one of the most vulnerable communities within the immigrant population in the U.S. and the country writ large, many undocumented queer artists are also using their lived experiences to politically empower their communities. Read more from curator M. Lilliana Ramirez and the artists here. About the artist: Alexa Vasquez is a trans woman of color and child migrant from the state of Oaxaca in Mexico. She is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus in painting, writing, and fashion. Her work is autobiographical, poetic and political and her visual artworks are inspired by Oaxaca, by the experience of a migrant longing to make it back home. Her writings are memories of growing up in an immigrant household, leaving home, transitioning, and exploring trans womanhood. The thrill of going behind-the-scenes to view the artistic process is an opportunity very few people ever get. In the case of Dr. Seuss, we can no longer visit his studio or see his creative process in action. But, with the never seen in San Diego “the spark of an icon” FREE exhibit at Exclusive Collections Gallery (EC Gallery) now we can. May 17th through June 7th, these concept drawings transport us to the moment of creation and allow us to peer over his shoulder as they come to life. We can feel the spark of creation as we follow the curved and dippy lines and watch as they form the icons that have now become so familiar in our everyday lives. To kick off this special exhibit, the gallery will hold a VIP reception on Friday, May 17 from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Ted Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) drew each page for every Dr. Seuss book published during his lifetime. What many people don’t realize is that for each final-line drawing, he would create multiple concept drawings leading up to the final published image. The works in this exhibition are a shining example that perfection is illusive, that perseverance in achieving one’s goals is a worthy pursuit, and that passion for one’s craft is more important than achieving the perfect outcome.
