Under the direction of Producing Artist Martin Anthony Dorado, this event will include outdoor dance performance + picnic shenanigans in collaboration with The Big Gay Picnic! Between performances, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy a good ol’ picnic. Choreographers include Melissa De la Torre, Tina Carreras, Juliette Trout, Odessa Uno, and Megan Curet, with a picnic blanket installation with Collective Memory. PICNIC (noun) A picnic is an excursion or outing with shareable foods provided by the participants and eaten in the open. Picnickers like to sit on the ground, on a rug or blanket while dining “alfresco.” Picnics can be informal or fancy, playful or elegant, simple or extravagant. The word "charaiveti," from an ancient Sanskrit hymn, means "keep moving," in search of self-realization. The leading Indian economist Pranab Bardhan invokes this in his moving narrative of a personal and professional journey. From his beginnings in a poor neighborhood in Kolkata and being home-schooled by his father, followed by a vigorous student life at Presidency College in Kolkata and in Cambridge, England, Bardhan became one of the foremost development economists in the world. He has served as faculty at MIT, the Indian Statistical Institute and the Delhi School of Economics and is currently at the University of California, Berkeley. He provides a fascinating account of his richly varied and widely-traveled life, interwoven with thoughtful comments on politics and society both in India and abroad. His accounts are enlivened by a profusion of stories, anecdotes and amusing incidents and draw copiously from his interests in literature and film. We are excited to offer two natural Indigo workshops for Fiber Fest! Join us for an afternoon or evening of natural dyeing with the gorgeous blues of Indigo! Have you always been intrigued by the beauty of indigo. This class is a unique opportunity for you to upcycle and transform your favorite t-shirt, blouse, scarf, or a yard of fabric that you want to use for your next project. Each student is welcome to bring one item. Item must be all natural fibers and not weigh more than 1/2 pounds or measure beyond 1.5 yards (weigh fabric while it’s dry). There will be a brief instruction of shibori dye resist techniques that can be applied to your project. Come experience the magic of indigo using a natural organic indigo vat that will be made specially for the class. This class is appropriate for all ages. Fiber Fest Drop Spindles! We are excited to offer this fun woodworking workshop for Fiber Fest! Join us for a morning of fiber & woodworking friendship and camaraderie. This workshop is geared for fiber enthusiasts, menders, and beginners interested in making their own drop spindles for spinning yarn. This is a special offering in conjunction with Fiber Fest, a 3-day celebration of wool as a sustainable material. This 3-hour woodworking workshop will acquaint students with a woodturning lathe, its parts, the tools needed, safety tips, tool sharpening techniques and how to shape wood on a lathe. The class will consist of students learning to round a piece of square stock, learning the four basic cuts and turning a drop spindle as their take home project. This is a beginner-friendly workshop which is open to all genders. This class is appropriate for ages 16 years and older. All materials included.
