The exhibition responds to the maximalist visuals of a family party, and its "glitter" or remnants of identity carried through migration while settling in new places. The work reflects subcultures formed in the process of integration in Southern California as it weaves together elements of architecture, personal adornments, and symbolic motifs from the homes of the Latin American diaspora. Originally a gospel singer, Dorothy Mae "Lady Dottie" Whitsett's early career included performing with Kool and the Gang and Clarence Carter, among others. Back then, she called herself Miss Dynamite, moving around from residences in Alabama, New Jersey, Portland, Seattle, and Atlanta. After moving from Atlanta to San Diego in 1984, she eventually formed a jazz duo after meeting keyboardist Joey Guevara in a local piano bar. They were joined by Guevara's bandmates from Operator X, Stephen Rey (bass) and Brian Cantrell (drums). Rounding out the band are two guitarists, Isaiah Mitchell and Nathan Beale (of Dirty Sweet), as well as Joey's brother Dan Guevara on horns. The band won two 2007 San Diego Music Awards, for Best Blues and Best Blues Album, as well as landing Best Blues again in 2008. They earned another Best Blues Album award in September 2009, as well as winning Best Blues (again) in 2011 and 2012. As of 2009, they are signed with Hi-Speed Soul Records, a label launched by local music store M-Theory Records. Using a variety of cyanotype dyed fabrics, we will decorate a square of fabric that will be sewn onto the quilt we created last session! Making ARTS Series - Learn from and create with youth artists and professional teaching artists and contribute your piece to our Illuminated: Youth Arts Festival taking place in May! Thursday, April 18 — 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Learn the easiest way to paint beautiful florals and garden friends using the simple technique of brushstroke painting! It all comes down to exactly how to load your brush and then apply that to your surface. I will show you how to get that opaque look using a series of basic strokes that you build up together to get one cohesive look. In this class, you will learn how to use a round brush for every stroke to create pansies and a dragonfly. We will practice on my special reusable worksheets, and then move on to our project surface of a wooden Easter egg that you can display to showcase your work! All materials are included to complete the class. Come learn a new skill and bring out your creative side this year! Enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages. Megan Nguyen started taking classical piano lessons at the age of 6, and hasn't stepped away from the keys since! She discovered her love for singing early on, and later started gigging, writing, and teaching while attending college at UCSD. Her music style is a mixture of pop, soul, with classical and jazz influences. Megan has been a piano and voice teacher since 2015, specializing in classical performance and theory. She teaches through her private studio and is a member of the Music Teachers Association of California. She is also an instructor at Kalabash School of Music and Arts, Musikey, and Coronado Arts Academy.
