  • The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture of our popular Wine & Lecture series. We will delve into the fascinating history of the Chinese-American experience of running a well-known, longtime establishment in San Diego. Established in 1888 and lasting nearly a century, Quon Mane’s on Fifth Avenue purveyed porcelains, silks, and other so-called Chinese and Japanese “fancy goods”. The store grew up with San Diego to become its premier Asian retail business, with branch shops in Coronado, La Jolla, and elsewhere. In a presentation richly illustrated with images from the Quon family, the San Diego History Center, and the Coronado Historical Association, you will find out how businessman Quon Mane and his brothers contributed to the founding of the Hotel del Coronado, made connections with many of the city’s biggest names, and gained a foothold in turn-of-the-century San Diego. During this presentation, you will also gain insight into what the Chinese-Exclusion era experience was like in San Diego and how it was both similar and different to the Chinese-American experience across California. If you have any questions please email info@coronadohistory.org or call (619) 435-7242.

When not writing or teaching writing, she can be found rolling the dice as a Dungeon Master or mashing buttons on one of her way too many consoles. About "THE LUMINARIES" Hemlock Falls isn't like other towns. You won't find it on a map, your phone won't work here, and the forest outside town might just kill you. Winnie Wednesday wants nothing more than to join the Luminaries, the ancient order that protects Winnie's town—and the rest of humanity—from the monsters and nightmares that rise in the forest of Hemlock Falls every night. Ever since her father was exposed as a witch and a traitor, Winnie and her family have been shunned. But on her sixteenth birthday, she can take the deadly Luminary hunter trials and prove herself true and loyal—and restore her family's good name. Or die trying. But in order to survive, Winnie enlists the help of the one person who can help her train: Jay Friday, resident bad boy and Winnie’s ex-best friend. While Jay might be the most promising new hunter in Hemlock Falls, he also seems to know more about the nightmares of the forest than he should. Together, he and Winnie will discover a danger lurking in the forest no one in Hemlock Falls is prepared for. Not all monsters can be slain, and not all nightmares are confined to the dark. • Presented as part of the statewide California Festival: A Celebration of New Music, Project [BLANK]’s Composer Spotlight concert features recent chamber works by Laure Hiendl (b.1986, pronouns: they/he). Hiendl’s music is provocative, forward-thinking, and inherently political in the way that it considers the body in relation to music. Their eclectic influences pull from contemporary electronic dance music, taking digital sampling processes and recreating them with acoustic means. Central to the program is In Abeyance (2021), which takes the subtly shifting patterns produced by an electronic phasing sampler and produces them live with a lushly orchestrated chamber ensemble. Additionally, two works for voices and electronics will explore themes of gender, violence, and racial prejudice: 10 Bullets Through One Hole (2018), a challenging work that highlights the quasi-pornographic language used in firearm advertisements; and White Radiance TM (2020), a work for solo voice and instrumental ensemble that pulls its text from Jamaican philosopher and writer Sylvia Wynter’s meditation on Western standards of beauty – contrasting her powerful words with text taken from cosmetic advertisements.
