Curebound, a San Diego-based philanthropic organization that raises and invests strategic funding in translational cancer research projects, will host its annual signature event, in partnership with the San Diego Padres, Padres Pedal the Cause, on Sunday, April 7 at Petco Park. The community is invited to come together in the fight against cancer by raising awareness and funds for innovative cancer research in San Diego. Now more than ten years strong and over $21 million raised, Padres Pedal the Cause brings the community together with one vision: a world without cancer. The event combines upbeat spinning, cycling, and running/walking courses with many opportunities to get involved and participate: Participants can select from one of three cycling courses (25, 40, 55, or 75 miles), all of which will take riders over the beautiful Coronado Bridge. Participants will also have the option to run or walk a scenic 5K course in downtown San Diego that finishes at Petco Park. Participants can take a 50-minute spin class all day long at Petco Park. New for 2024! Rocky Road: All new 40-mile gravel hybrid course. Take this challenge with your current road bike (minimum tire width 35mm) or on a mountain bike for better handling. Families and friends are encouraged to take a first step toward ending cancer as part of this inspiring community challenge. 100% of every dollar raised from this event funds collaborative cancer research between Curebound’s six institutional research partners: Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, Salk Institute, Sanford Burnham Prebys, Rady Children’s Hospital, La Jolla Institute for Immunology, and Scripps Research. Oceanside Theatre Company’s newest exhibit “Black Perspective: A Celebration of Community, Family & Heritage” runs through March 24 at the Brooks Theater Gallery in the lobby of the Sunshine Brooks Theater in Oceanside and can be viewed cost-free.Thematically aligned with two of the theater’s major events at the beginning of the year, “Black Perspective” complements the performing arts taking place on stage. The first event, “Generational Black Pioneers: Oceanside Firsts” on February 17 and 18, highlights black leaders who have fought for change in Oceanside. In March, OTC is thrilled to produce the San Diego Premiere of “Chicken & Biscuits,” a feel-good comedy written by black playwright Douglas Lyons and centered around the complex dynamics of a modern black family. Lyons was one of a record-breaking eight black playwrights whose work was on Broadway in 2021, but forced to shutdown due to ongoing Covid cases. Featuring 29 artists, 12 of whom are showing at the Brooks Theater Gallery for the first time, “Black Perspective” includes a myriad of different styles including portraits, sculptures, nail art, and powerful social justice themes. About the event: San Diego New Music and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library present Labyrinth, a music and dance performance co-created by Kristopher and Dina Apple. Labyrinths have been used throughout history as devices for meditation, metaphors for storytelling, and as a bridge between the physical and metaphysical. Taking inspiration from these mythologies and practices, a cross-disciplinary ensemble weaves sound, movement, and text into a contemplative listening experience—a listening labyrinth. You are invited to the listening labyrinth—to follow the thread of now, gather your senses at each passing moment, and reflect on the potential for transformation. About the performers: Kristopher and Dina are music and dance makers from San Diego, California, whose work explores cross-disciplinary ensemble practices and performance-making that is often improvised and interactive. Kristopher is a violinist and composer working at the intersection of music, dance, text, and digital media. He teaches digital audio at the University of San Diego, accompanies dance classes at UC San Diego, MiraCosta College, and Palomar College, and has recently been a featured composer and performer with LITVAKdance, IMAGOmoves, and San Diego Dance Theater. Dina is a dance maker whose work investigates cross-disciplinary collaboration, practices of social choreography, and dance as a responsive and investigative act. She holds an MFA from UC San Diego and a BFA from San Diego State University and attended the Ricean School of Dance. The students in this workshop will delve into the more formal forms of poetry styles; their histories and contemporary usage. We will continue to discuss the design and organization of complete books of poetry, both the chapbook and the full book. Each participant will choose two books of poetry and complete the analysis of both the poems and the structure/organization of the books, submit, by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the books and be ready to give a short presentation about the findings to the class of one of the books. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop. In this talk, Ramírez will set forth an introduction to brown artistic practices that put neo-colonial and liberal reason in crisis. Furthermore, he seeks to think about the paradoxical relationship between contemporary art and indigeneity as a creative entanglement that reshapes the repertoires of art history and museum collections. Pablo José Ramírez is a curator and an author. He is a curator at the Hammer Museum and co-curated "Made in LA 2023: Acts of Living" together with Diana Nawi. He was the inaugural adjunct curator of "First Nations and Indigenous Art" at Tate Modern (2019-2023). Ramirez was a co-curator of the 19th Paiz Biennale: Transvisible and part of the curatorial team of the 58th Carnegie International. He is the co-founder of Infrasonica, a leading curatorial platform for non-Western sonic cultures. He holds an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths University of London.
