  • A new project pairing Hiromi’s incomparable piano mastery with string quartet featuring PUBLIQuartet. In the two decades since Hiromi released her stunning debut album Another Mind, the Japanese pianist/composer has blazed an incandescent trail across the jazz scene. Her fertile imagination and boundless creativity seem to ripple out of her as effortlessly as her virtuosic pianism. Equally impressive in acoustic or electric settings, she delves into a different kind of fusion on her latest project that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Applauded by the Washington Post as “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music,” the GRAMMY-nominated PUBLIQuartet’s modern interpretation of chamber music makes them one of the most dynamic artists of their generation. Dedicated to presenting new works for string quartet, PUBLIQuartet rose on the music scene as winner of the 2013 Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places award, and in 2019 garnered Chamber Music America’s prestigious Visionary Award for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical, jazz, and world chamber music. • Ever since the 2003 release of her groundbreaking debut, Another Mind, pianist Hiromi has astonished audiences with a creative energy that eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical, and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Taking the stage as part of the electrified four-piece ensemble sonicwonder, Hiromi builds on the spark of collaboration to create something magnificent. Born in Hamamatsu, Japan in 1979, Hiromi’s was first exposed to jazz by first piano teacher, Noriko Hikida, who introduced her to the great pianists Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson. She enrolled in the Yamaha School of Music and started writing music. Hiromi moved to the United States in 1999 and studied at the Berklee College of Music. Among her mentors was jazz bassist/arranger Richard Evans, who took Hiromi’s demo to his friend, the legendary pianist Ahmad Jamal; they co-produced Hiromi’s first album, Another Mind. The album was a critical success in North America and Japan, where it shipped gold and received the Recording Industry Association of Japan’s Jazz Album of the Year Award. In 2009, Hiromi recorded with pianist Chick Corea on Duet, a live recording of their concert in Tokyo. She also appeared on bassist Stanley Clarke’s GRAMMY-winning release, Jazz in the Garden. In the summer of 2021, she performed at the opening ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics. Sonicwonder features Adam O’Farrill on trumpet, Hadrien Feraud on bass, and Gene Coye on drums. • Changing Light is a special celebration of International Women's Day, honoring remarkable composers from across the globe. Curated by UC San Diego Distinguished Professor of Music Susan Narucki, the hour-long program is a constellation of exquisitely crafted vocal chamber music rarely heard in the United States. Narucki is joined on the program by superb guest artists Kirsten Ashley Wiest, coloratura soprano, Alex Greenbaum, cello, and Alexander Ishov, flute, which takes place at the UC San Diego Department of Music's Conrad Prebys Concert Hall on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 7 p.m. The program also focuses on works which create a unique fusion of poetry and music which explore the seemingly endless expressive potential of the singing voice. Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina, now in her nineties, has written an astonishing array of powerful works, from large scale symphonic and choral works to intimate, eclectic chamber music. Her "Letter to Rimma Dalos" for voice and cello is a tribute to the great Russian poet. German-American composer Ursula Mamlok was an essential voice in the modernist New York scene of the mid 20th century as well as an important teacher of composition. With exquisite attention to balance in form and attuned to fine gradations of instrumental and vocal color, her" Stray Birds", for coloratura soprano, flute and cello, are jewel-like settings of poems of Rabindranath Tagore. Columbian born composer Alba Potes' distinctive music combines beautifully defined formal structures, with a subtle underpinning of Latin American traditional music. One of Mamlok's most distinguished mentees, Potes' moving TRINOS, commissioned by Narucki, will be performed by Narucki and Wiest to poems by Javier Tafur Gonzalez, in its world premiere performance The late Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho was one of music's most important composers, writing exceptional music in the genres of opera, chamber music, choral works and music combination with electronics. We honor her by presenting her iconic "From the Grammar of Dreams" for two sopranos and her "Changing Light" for soprano and cello, a gentle prayer for grace and serenity. Join us for an evening of remarkable music created by exceptional women!
