In this free Front Row lecture, professor Benjamin Cravatt will explain how his large-scale protein profiling research and innovative chemical technologies are helping identify novel drugs for therapeutic targets previously deemed ‘undruggable.’ Cravatt’s translational work, which is at the intersection of chemistry and biology, has also led to the formation of multiple local biotechnology companies that collectively employ hundreds of scientists who are developing first-in-class candidate medicines for diverse diseases ranging from cancer to neurological disorders.   • This Halloween, The Gondola Company brings back its popular A Haunting in Venice Cruises, running October 26–31 through the quiet canals of the Coronado Cays in San Diego Bay. Inspired by the atmospheric film "A Haunting in Venice," these evening cruises blend the relaxation of a traditional Venetian gondola ride with the mystery and charm of Halloween. Guests are escorted by masked, cloaked gondoliers while soft organ music and haunting melodies create a uniquely eerie ambiance. New for this year, guests can pre-order the dramatic Black Rose Boo-quet ($85) to enhance the mood, and are encouraged to come dressed in costume to fully embrace the theme. Larger groups can book the Haunting Caorlina Cruise, a private gondola seating up to 14 for a floating masquerade experience. Operated by The Gondola Company, this seasonal favorite is one of Southern California’s most unique and atmospheric Halloween events.

Arguably the most influential surfboard shaper of in the 1960’s and 1970’s, Dick Brewer has often been called the father of the modern-day surfboard. He changed the design of surfing equipment not once, not twice, but three times in his 50-year career as a trailblazer, with all the notorious tales that have until now remained just rumored legends. Brewer’s designs have been interpreted, modified, and often copied through the gifted hands of shapers on every coast and in every decade since the 1960’s. He mentored, taught, and inspired dozens of the world’s top shapers. Today, his rails, his rockers, and bottom are intrinsic to surfboard design. Directed and edited with the skill of a lifelong cinematographer Bob Campi, this biopic captures the rise, fall, and ultimate redemption of visionary who changed the world of surfing forever. that was a trailblazer throughout his career. The filmmakers tell his story with phenomenal cinematography and archival footage coupled with this retro soundtrack, this film will take you back to the era where surfers and board designers redefined what riding a wave could be.   • This eight-week workshop style course introduces students to a popular and fun printmaking technique of silk screen. No prior experience in printmaking is necessary. Students will create vibrant, multicolor prints using water-based silk-screen materials while exploring their own style and applying this popular method to their own imagery. The direct, on-screen stencil techniques, such as screen filler/drawing fluid or wax crayon, as well as indirect, photo-emulsion methods of drawing on Mylar will be shown, and digital file preparation will be explored. A stencil monotype-printing and mixed-media approaches will be covered. Students will learn how to set up their own DIY studio and will learn all aspects of preparation, setup, and production of fine art prints. Materials: Ink and studio materials will be provided.
