  • Join us for some good old fashioned -- and kind-of messy-- FUN during our annual Halloween-themed Pumpkin Chunkin’ celebration at the San Diego Air & Space Museum in Balboa Park. You can wear your favorite costume as you construct a catapult to launch candy pumpkins. Try to land your pumpkin safely or use our 3D pens to make creepy sculptures. You can even drive our new robot ghouls! Pumpkin Chunkin’ takes place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of and inside the Museum. In one of our favorite annual traditions, we will be doing our famous pumpkin drop – some WITH parachutes, and some WITHOUT – from the roof of the Museum during our “scientific exploration.” When: Saturday Oct 11, 10 a.m. to 1p.m. Where: San Diego Air and Space Museum - 3D Printing Spider Webs - Decorate a Sphero Ghost and Maneuver it around - Launch your own Pumpkin from a Catapult - Safely land your cargo by building a Parachute - Watch as we launch Pumpkins from the Roof of the Museum Pumpkin Chunkin’ is included with admission to the Museum.   • October is National Dental Hygiene Month. and Concorde Career College–San Diego is partnering with PDS Health to provide no-cost dental care to children ages 4–17. Adult and senior appointments will also be accepted. This event is part of a nationwide initiative to honor the dental hygiene profession, and promote the importance of preventive care and access to oral health services for children and families. All dental services are provided by Concorde Dental Hygiene, students under the direct supervision of faculty and licensed dental professionals. PDS Health is providing toothbrushes for all kids in attendance. The event is open to the public. Cleaning appointments fill up quickly, and pre-registration is required. No one will be turned away. If appointments on October 13 fill up, Concorde will work with area residents to schedule them in the coming weeks during their regular Community Dental Hygiene Clinic hours.   • Open Studio at the Athenaeum Art Center invites local printmakers and artists to utilize the equipment and space in the printmaking studio. Prior knowledge in printmaking and equipment familiarity is required as open studio time is not for learning a new printmaking process or one on one lessons. The Athenaeum Art Center offers printmaking courses throughout the year for those wanting to learn a new craft or wanting to enhance their art practice. Open Studio is free for everyone.   • The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On October 17, we will have Phil Dannels on the piano. Pianist, composer, and tenor Dannels studied music at Point Loma Nazarene University. He has been heard in recital throughout the United States and has performed as a soloist at Copley Symphony Hall in San Diego in masterclass with Lang Lang. Dannels has performed under the auspices of the San Diego Opera, Bodhi Tree Concerts, and Point Loma Opera Theatre. He spent several seasons as the assistant conductor for Point Loma Opera Theatre and directed their production of "Donizetti’s Rita."
