In this talk, Youngmin delves into the rich tradition and history of bojagi, Korean wrapping cloths, and the enduring practice of creating them. In Korean culture, bojagi are believed to wrap not only objects but also bok—good fortune or happiness. Youngmin will share her personal creative journey and pursuit of happiness, which have connected her to a broader creative community. Through her work, she will discuss how she inspires and educates, helping to ensure that the art of bojagi continues to thrive for future generations. Youngmin Lee is a textile artist specializing in the traditional Korean art of bojagi. Since relocating from South Korea to California in 1996, she has dedicated herself to preserving and innovating within this tradition, which emphasizes sustainability through recycling and upcycling fabric remnants. In 2024, Youngmin published "Bojagi: The Art of Korean Textiles," a book that delves into the beauty and history of bojagi. She also founded the Korean Textile Tour in 2017, creating a platform to introduce a broader audience to Korean traditional textile arts and culture. Copies of "Bojagi: The Art of Korean Textiles" are available for sale in Shop Mingei, and a book signing will take place directly after the talk. Prog-Rock Powerhouse Stick Men Return to San Diego with Chapman Stick Virtuoso Tom Griesgraber Nearly two years since their last San Diego performance, Stick Men — the progressive rock supergroup featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theater in San Marcos. This marks a special homecoming of sorts, as Mastelotto and Reuter were the first national touring act to perform at the Bornemann’s Grand Opening in May 2024, along with Trey Gunn as part of their band TU-NER. Formed in 2007, Stick Men is known for their adventurous sound built around electric touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the self-designed U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his mastery of the Chapman Stick, an instrument that simultaneously covers both bass and melody. Mastelotto brings an innovative approach to percussion, blending acoustic drums with an electronic setup, while Reuter adds layers of depth and texture with his custom instrument. Combined, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is renowned Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber, whose genre-blending performances often include guitar Theremin and collaborations with artists from the California Guitar Trio to RYMO featuring Slightly Stoopid’s drummer Ryan Moran. With over ten releases and a resume that includes touring with Jerry Marotta and opening for legends like Steve Hackett and Al DiMeola, Griesgraber’s set promises a diverse and compelling lead-in to the night’s headliners. Join us for a fun still-life oil painting workshop inspired by a colorful summer tea party. All aspects of still-life painting will be covered in this two-day workshop: perspective, composition, color, and accuracy will be taught using a tabletop arrangement of cups, saucers, teapots, and flowers. Bright colors and a square format will encourage experimentation. Grab a coffee; we will begin each morning with a PowerPoint lesson followed by a demo on the painting process and technique. Afterward students will paint independently for the remainder of the morning. As the paintings progress, students will learn through discussion of creative issues and group critique. Pat welcomes students of all levels. Materials: A $5 fee will be paid to Pat on the first day of class. Mary Mattingly is an interdisciplinary artist who cares deeply about water and believes in the power of public art. Mattingly founded "Swale", an edible landscape on a public barge in New York City. Recent public art projects include "Limnal Lacrimosa" in Glacier National Park in Montana; "Public Water" with +More Art in New York; "Vanishing Point" with Metal Southend and "Focal Point Gallery" in the UK. Mattingly has exhibited sculpture and photography at the Cuenca, Istanbul, and Havana Biennials; Storm King Art Center in New York; the International Center of Photography in New York; the Seoul Art Center; the Brooklyn Museum in New York; and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. She has received grants from the James L. Knight Foundation, the Harpo Foundation, the Jerome Foundation, and the Art Matters Foundation, among others. Her work has been featured in Aperture, Art in America, Sculpture, The New York Times, Le Monde, and on Art21, and included in such publications as Nature – part of the Whitechapel/MIT Press Documents of Contemporary Art series– and Henry Sayre’s A World of Art (8th edition), published by Pearson Education, Inc. In 2022, a monograph of her work, What Happens After, was published by the Anchorage Museum and Hirmer Verlag. Co-sponsored by the Nature, Space and Politics working group of the UCSD International Institute, this lecture is introduced and moderated by Dr. Pinar Yoldas, an infradisciplinary designer/artist/researcher and Associate Professor and head of the Speculative Design Area in the Department of Visual Arts.
