Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour kumiko skill-building workshop! Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodworking technique of assembling individual pieces of wood, without the use of nails, into geometric patterns. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of a hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. San Diego Craft Collective welcomes Ashley Lohr, a special guest artist and educator from Southeast Alaska! In this workshop, students will be introduced to the art of powder enamel and learn the skills to create 1-pair of torch-fired enamel earrings. Students will be using lead-free Thompson enamel on copper metal. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. We will be using a handheld butane torch as our heat source. Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch. * Students will have their own enameling station/ will not be sharing materials. * Choose from a variety of copper metal shapes to enamel on. * Work with 11 Thompson powder enamel colors to choose your palette. * Use stencils, sgraffito tools, and frit to create your own unique designs. * All jewelry created will be ready to wear at the end of the workshop. This workshop is for beginners and for those who’d like a refresher. All materials to create 1 pair of earrings. Masks and safety goggles will be provided. This class is appropriate for ages 16 years and older. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. Frit is thick crumbs of enamel that melt into organic shapes of color: perfect for specks of holiday color! We will be using a handheld butane torch as our heat source. -Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch. -Students will have their own enameling station/ will not be sharing materials. -Work with green and blue opaque and transparent Thompson powder enamel colors. -Choose a variety of frit color to decorate to add flare over 3 shapes. -Use sgraffito tools to draw in the tree textures. -Jump rings and pliers will be used to assemble the pieces together. A golden star and hanger will be provided and all holiday trees created will be ready to hang at the end of the workshop. This workshop is for beginners and for those who’d like a refresher. Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: -Carving safety -Honing/sharpening -Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood -Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle -Carving out the handle -Sanding the spoon and handle -Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary. Comic-Con, held annually in San Diego, California, features major comic book publishers, game companies, movie studios, television networks, and toy manufacturers and is the premier event of its kind in the world. David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer for the San Diego Comic Convention parent company of Comic-Con, WonderCon and the Comic-Con Museum in San Diego will discuss all things Comic Con and give us an inside look at one of the biggest multi-genre entertainment events. Glanzer oversees all advertising, sponsorship, promotional associations, and over 3,500 members of the domestic and international media. This exhibit features the work of two MiraCosta College Art Faculty: Ryan Gray and Dean Ramos. Gray's work is often an attempt to shed light on the devastation that nuclear and chemical contamination has on our bodies and environments. Ramos uses a variety of materials to create artworks that range from abstract explorations of materials and forms to depictions of the body that investigate psychological and emotional states.
