Join us for our Annual Turkey Calling Show and learn more about the beloved turkey through calling techniques and more. This noisy show at the Library has become a community tradition. Kids are welcome (and they’ll be reciting turkey-related riddles). Presented as an old-time radio show, this celebration is filled with music, sound effects, stories and facts of interest… prizes, too (no one leaves empty-handed). Your host and bandleader Scott Paulson, a UC San Diego alumnus and exhibits and events coordinator at the Library, has been lauded by the San Diego Union-Tribune for his entertaining shows: “an avant-garde vaudevillian, think Samuel Beckett meets John Cage.” The Los Angeles Times relayed “Paulson’s brand of G-rated fun, a sort of modern-day morphing of Captain Kangaroo and Spike Jones, is always lively and at times wonderfully chaotic.” Special guests this year: Story Lady Melanie Peters, DJ Camille Cannon and Turkey Hotline Operator Karen Fisher. MiraCosta College choral singers and music majors perform cherished classics paired with re-imagined versions of well-known pieces. San Diego has awarded more than $365,000 to local businesses and nonprofits to help them rebuild and recover from the Jan. 22 storm, it was announced Friday.

The fire was reported just before 1:30 p.m. near the 9700 block of Arapaho Street, near Jamacha Boulevard.

Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour kumiko skill-building workshop! Kumiko is an ancient Japanese woodworking technique of assembling individual pieces of wood, without the use of nails, into geometric patterns. Kumiko has been used in constructing shoji screens, latticework, and other decorative elements in traditional Japanese architecture. In this workshop, students will learn the basics of kumiko, including the use of a hand tools to cut the pieces and assemble the frame. Each student will work on a small project to finish and take home. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. San Diego Craft Collective welcomes Ashley Lohr, a special guest artist and educator from Southeast Alaska! In this workshop, students will be introduced to the art of powder enamel and learn the skills to create 1-pair of torch-fired enamel earrings. Students will be using lead-free Thompson enamel on copper metal. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. We will be using a handheld butane torch as our heat source. Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch. * Students will have their own enameling station/ will not be sharing materials. * Choose from a variety of copper metal shapes to enamel on. * Work with 11 Thompson powder enamel colors to choose your palette. * Use stencils, sgraffito tools, and frit to create your own unique designs. * All jewelry created will be ready to wear at the end of the workshop. This workshop is for beginners and for those who’d like a refresher. All materials to create 1 pair of earrings. Masks and safety goggles will be provided. This class is appropriate for ages 16 years and older. Students will be using lead-free Thompson powder enamel and enamel frit on 3 pieces of copper metal that will be connected with jump rings to create a tree shape. Enamel is a glassy compound applied to and bonded by heat (fusion) to a metal surface. Frit is thick crumbs of enamel that melt into organic shapes of color: perfect for specks of holiday color! We will be using a handheld butane torch as our heat source. -Learn how to prep, sift enamel, clean fire scale, and fire with a handheld butane torch. -Students will have their own enameling station/ will not be sharing materials. -Work with green and blue opaque and transparent Thompson powder enamel colors. -Choose a variety of frit color to decorate to add flare over 3 shapes. -Use sgraffito tools to draw in the tree textures. -Jump rings and pliers will be used to assemble the pieces together. A golden star and hanger will be provided and all holiday trees created will be ready to hang at the end of the workshop. This workshop is for beginners and for those who’d like a refresher. Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: -Carving safety -Honing/sharpening -Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood -Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle -Carving out the handle -Sanding the spoon and handle -Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary. Superheroes, villains, fans, artists and more gather in America’s Finest City to celebrate pop culture, art, and of course comic books! Comic-Con, held annually in San Diego, California, features major comic book publishers, game companies, movie studios, television networks, and toy manufacturers and is the premier event of its kind in the world. David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer for the San Diego Comic Convention parent company of Comic-Con, WonderCon and the Comic-Con Museum in San Diego will discuss all things Comic Con and give us an inside look at one of the biggest multi-genre entertainment events. Glanzer oversees all advertising, sponsorship, promotional associations, and over 3,500 members of the domestic and international media.
