It’s the spooky season and the City of San Diego is inviting kids of all ages to enjoy fun, seasonal activities in the spirit of Halloween. Fall Festival events are planned at multiple recreation centers and parks throughout the city and promise a spooktacular time. Activities include costume contests, outdoor movies, carnivals and lots of candy. Events are free to attend and scheduled nearly every day leading up to Oct. 31. From the gallery: ONE, Quint’s Logan Heights satellite space, will exhibit Light & Space artist Robert Irwin’s #7 x 8' (Blue Lou 2), a 2015 work which reflects his ongoing exploration of light, shadow, reflection, and color as material and tools for perception. Blue Lou 2 stems from the artist’s return to a studio practice which experiments with sculpture employing vertically-mounted fluorescent light bulbs wrapped in layers of theatrical gels, while continuing to expand upon his installation practice. Irwin’s inquiries into perception have expanded the definition of artmarking to include “site-conditional” art, which responds to the surrounding environment while drawing attention away from the materials themselves and removing the separation between the artwork and the space itself. These ephemeral viewing experiences and architectural interventions in both indoor and outdoor sites have defined his 60-year career and enduring legacy in contemporary art. About the artist: Born in 1928 in Long Beach, California and a longtime resident of San Diego, Robert Irwin has completed numerous permanent installations around the world, including 1° 2° 3° 4° (1997) at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, which blurred the space between the gallery and ocean by cutting four windows to expose the space to exterior light, air, smells, and sounds. In 2016, Irwin’s large-scale permanent installation and courtyard design Untitled (dawn to dusk) opened at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, occupying a dilapidated former hospital building measuring approximately 10,000 square feet. Irwin divided the building’s interior into two wings—making one wing dark and the other light through the employment of evenly spaced windows and scrims bisecting each side. Irwin has also completed numerous site-conditioned landscape design projects, including the Central Gardens at the J. A world premiere play by Kate Hamill Directed by Rob Lutfy The Little Fellow is a risqué comedic drama loosely based on the life and tell-all memoirs of the 19th century’s most famous courtesan – Harriette Wilson, also known as The Little Fellow. Since the age of thirteen, Harriet has navigated through the pitiless and glamorous world of the British regency’s demi-monde: eventually becoming the “top of the bottom” as the self-styled Queen of Tarts. Her defiance of social conventions and refusal to be a lady have attracted many patrons – included some of the country’s most distinguished and high-powered men. But Harriet wants to get out of the ‘business’… and she has a plan. A plan that may threaten her reputation, her business, and ultimately, her life – as she confronts the cost of winning in an unjust world. This World Premiere received its first reading through the Bill and Judy Garrett Finish Line Commission. Advisories: Mature humor, sexual content, mature & sexual themes, and depictions of violence. Bread & Salt and curator/artist Jason Sherry come together to present an experimental Halloween art experience of multiple installations only on Friday, October 27th, and Saturday, October 28 from 5 PM - 9 PM. This group show of over 20 artists will feature light, sound, and sculptural installations that run the gamut of Halloween lore. Scenes and performances will take audiences from the horrifying to the campy. Each experience will be set together in the old brick room of the Bread and Salt galleries and laid out in a haunted house-styled maze. From nightmares of the natural world to the horrors of technology – this project will evolve throughout the night and offer audiences a taste of fear and satire as told by the experimental artist community of San Diego. From the organizers: Little Amal is the 12 foot puppet of a 10 year old Syrian refugee child at the heart of The Walk. She has become a global symbol of human rights, especially those of refugees. Between Sept. 7 and Nov. 26 2023, Amal is journeying 11,000 miles across the United States and Mexico in one of the largest free public festivals ever created. Join Blindspot Collective and ArtPower at South Mission Beach for Washed Ashore Amal is yearning to play with other children at the beach when she discovers the remnants of cherished belongings that have been washed ashore. As she listens to the sea, she thinks about the millions of refugee children across the world, who, like her, are searching for a better life. Audiences will be greeted by food trucks and an invitation to sit with us for a family-style picnic, before being joined by Little Amal herself as we explore the hope that she has shared across the world and her continued search for peace and belonging. The puppet of Little Amal was designed and built by Handspring Puppet Company. Everywhere Amal goes she is greeted with events that are authentic and meaningful to the local people she meets. This could be a parade through a city centre, playground games with children at schools, a visit to a place of worship, an outdoor theatre or dance performance, a musical concert, a whole-city art installation, intimate encounters with children and families or ceremonies of welcome led by city mayors or other senior civic officials.
