The San Diego Italian Film Festival may be the new kid on the block but they have been actively bringing films to San Diego both at their festival and for single screening film events. These are films that have not played in San Diego before and are unlikely to receive any kind of release here.

At NATO's summit Friday and Saturday, leaders will map out a plan to start transitioning some provinces to Afghan control by early next year. Herat may be on the list, despite a recent uptick in violence. Its governor says that's possible, but the province isn't there yet.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich has ordered state universities to develop ways for students to get a bachelor's degree in three years. The hope is that it will help save students money and get them into the job market more quickly. But one expert says it shouldn't be called a bachelor's degree.

The Sixth Annual San Diego Black Film Festival kicks off tonight, January 29, at the Regal United Artists Theatres at Horton Plaza with a mix of documentaries and short features. There's an opening night reception at 6:00 pm followed by an evening of films. Among them are Black Indians, a documentary narrated by James Earl Jones that looks to Indians of African descent, and Newark Street Preachers, about a group of New Jersey preachers who march where drug dealers and gangs rule in order to take back the streets. The festival will also be presenting their 2009 Award of Merit to actor Louis Gossett, Jr. (pictured left). Gossett can also be seen in the new film The Least Among Us on Saturday at 7:00 pm. Actor and martial arts expert Michael Jai White will be receiving the festival's Filmmaker's Choice Award.

Production begins on the new Chevy Cruze in Lordstown, Ohio, on Monday. GM is counting on the car as part of its economic resurgence, and Lordstown is counting on the newly created jobs.
