  • The 37th Annual Balboa Park Pow Wow returns on May 10 and May 11 in Balboa Park (the corner of Park Blvd. and President’s Way). This free, family-friendly event is open for all to experience a weekend full of tradition, vibrant performances, and cultural pride. The community is invited to experience the richness of Native American heritage through music, dance, art, and community connection. Native singers, drummers, and dancers from throughout the Southwest will gather to practice their traditions in their beautiful regalia. Pow Wows are a spiritual experience for American Indians and an opportunity to preserve and pass on the customs and traditions which keep Native heritage alive. Each day, the Pow Wow will showcase traditional activities such as Kumeyaay Bird Singing, Gourd Dancing, Inter-Tribal Dancing, and Honoring of community leaders. There will also be dozens of local vendors and food booths serving delicious fry bread and other Native American dishes. Native artists will have beautiful hand-crafted items for purchase, such as jewelry, clothes, blankets, art, and more. Saturday’s honoring will be dedicated to the United States Military for their service, and Sunday’s honoring will be dedicated to all the mothers and grandmothers in celebration of Mother's Day. Congressman Scott Peters will be speaking at the event on Saturday to speak on SDAIHC’s impactful service to the community. The Pow Wow is hosted by San Diego American Indian Health Center (SDAIHC). As a community clinic, SDAIHC serves all San Diegans regardless of ethnicity, age, or background. The center promotes excellence in healthcare and welcomes new patients to join its diverse community. SDAIHC aims to reduce the significant health disparities in San Diego’s under-served populations, and brings hope, resilience, and healing to the thousands that are served yearly. • Join us to get outside, immerse yourself in nature, and make a positive impact for the San Diego River! Join a community of like-minded volunteers working to restore the San Diego River Estuary - a highly sensitive habitat that is home to several endangered species. By removing invasive plants, you’ll directly support the return of native pollinators and wildlife, prevent erosion, improve water quality, and protect endangered species, like the California Least Tern. Together, we will create a healthier, more accessible natural space for the entire community to enjoy. This is a huge effort and a great opportunity for those looking to try out field work, connect with fellow nature lovers, make a meaningful difference for a critical and fragile ecosystem, and explore the beautiful estuary habitat! We’d love to see you there! RSVP Here: https://sandiegoriver.galaxydigital.com/need/detail/?need_id=1087643 What to Expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred. Who Would Be Perfect for the Team: We welcome individuals from all walks of life! Retired folks can use their time and experience to contribute to the environment, while students seeking hands-on experience in habitat restoration can gain valuable knowledge and skills. Families are also encouraged to participate, as our activities are a great way to bond and instill a sense of stewardship for the natural world in children. If you are passionate about making a difference and want to help restore the San Diego River, you would be an ideal fit for our team. Please note: The meeting location is NEAR the address listed.
